The idea is to make the wing ball. You can analyse the gaps in the rack, and work out the best place to position the cue ball to make the wing ball. Less speed means it is much easier to leave the cue ball in the center of the table. With the Sardo, and breaking from the rail, it is fairly easy to consistently make the wing ball.

Joe Tucker has an excellent DVD on the dynamics of this.

Great articles Blackjack!
Great articles, yes, but not necessarily applicable for a perfect rack. I wish I had taken a picture of my table a couple of weeks after first using my racking template. The break was so consistent that it actually wore white lines, 8 of them, coming off the rack that told you where each ball was going, time after time.

The inside corner ball went straight in about 95% of the time. The one went to the opposite side most of the time, and the ball behind the one banked into the near side with great frequency, if I remember correctly. You could hit it as softly as you wanted to and play shape. The 9-ball didn't leave a line because it hardly ever moved. I ran a 6-pack, dogged an easy ball the next rack, ran another 6-pack, and quit playing 9-ball. Seven (3-times in tournaments!!!) was my high run in about 25 years of playing before that. But keep in mind I have all 4" pockets on my table, it's waaaaay too easy.
