Solid ivory joint?

A few questions. Is a "solid" ivory joint the same as capped? How thick should the cap be? Also has anyone made a capped phenolic joint with good results?

Thanks for your replies

Both of your first two questions are going to a personal opinion thing kind of like what the different ring positions are labeled. Myself, I would not consider a soild joint and capped as the same. As far as the thinkness of the cap, I'm sure they have ranged from no cap to almost solid. And sleeved as well. I have done capped and sleeved, both with no issues. Capped phenolic I have never done, but I'm sure it has been.

So in a solid ivory joint is there no tenon at all that the ivory goes over? Is it just glued to the end of the forearm?

yes even in a solid ivory joint there is a tenon. Structurally that is the best way. IMO. I don't like sleeved. If solid ivory cracks then a sleeve 1/10 in doesn't seen to sound. I do piloted ivory The same as ss

I do 1' long capped flat face over a 3/4" long threaded tenon. The thread on the forearm tenon is only 5/8"" long and 1/8' unthreaded for centering. Being that my market is inter-continental, the best way that I've configured this is to NOT get the ivory too tight over the threaded tenon. Use rigid hardening epoxy closes to the cap and flex curing in the barrel wall. If there should ever be a break on the moisture barrier of your cue then wood expansion won't cause the ivory to crack.
