for over a hundred years now, since 1880 and on, when the table, balls cue and cloth came into being, deflection has caused more missing in the fellow cueiest, than any other cause, including miscueing and women sitting infront of your pocket, with beatiful legs. well, then i'm here to tell you how to finally cure this dreaded cuecancer called deflection. for those unfamiliar, deflection is the cue ball acting like a 2 year old child. you some come, he stays, you say no, he say's yes. when you put left english on the white, it goes left! this sickness, this fault, this --- cancer is known as deflection. it stems from shaft bending. each shaft bends when struck with a lot of force. this "bend" takes the integrity away from the white, almost if you had a dog on a leash, and the leash broke for the split second the dog saw another dog! anyway, after studying deflection for years, i've come up with philosophys, theorys and methods that will pinpoint the problem, thus removing it ALTOGETHER in our cue worlds, so we could get on with the game, and avoid the compensation factor. let me now begin. with the average pool shaft, that has a pro, or custom taper, the following applys, after i go thru this, i will address other tapers. the distance of cue ball to object ball is in direct i repeat Direct, relation to the amount of compansation that is to be adjusted in the deflection compansation mode. let me start the examples. when the object ball is only 2 inches away from the pocket, and the cue ball is only 3 inches away from the object ball, you may go ahead and use all the side spin in the world, with all the speed you would like to use. the fact is at this range there is NO deflection. actually there is deflection but it won't be noticed. almost like when a sick person comes to work, but they are NOT contagious. at this short distnace, you can have a party, and you will notice there is no deflection at all. move the cue ball to 5 inches away from the object ball, and now, deflection is on the border line of slightly creeping into play. here you may want to use a human hair's worth of compansation. anything from 7 inches, and that is the magic number, 7 inches and beyond is deflection infested. now, you might say, "how do i know if it's 7 inches. get a ruler, and look at 7 inches for 15 mins. although this excericse sounds crazy, after 15 mins. you'll know what 7 inches looks like for the rest of your life! now here is the secret, the direct relationship between inches, english and aim. all of this is always equal. this is what i found out, and what makes it so reliable as to take away guess work! example given--------- 7 inch o.b. and c.b. half a tip of english half an inch of aim compensation the other way. 12 inches a tip and a half of english one inch and a half of aim compensation etc, etc. this will work, as long as your using a regular custom or pro tapered shaft. what happens if your using a s.s.t. from cuetec? then the numbers increase! 7 inches half a tip of english= one full inch of aim compensation. and if you go the other way with a very thick shaft, for instance the thickest shaft ever made, the schuler super constant, the numbers go down to zero!!! 12 inches one full tip of english= 0 aim compensation! this excersise is sure to eliminate all deflection you may encounter in the very near future of your, -- cuesport of choice. good shooting,--" THE SILENCER"

correction, when you hit the cue ball on the left, it goes to the right. that is deflection.

There is a much simpler way to counter deflection: Learn a good stroke. Many pros say this- when you are hitting the cueball good, less=more. In other words, someone with a good stroke can juice the cueball up way more by just hitting a little bit outside of center, as opposed to someone with a terrible stroke, they have to aim way outside of center to put some alot of juice on it. I think deflection is a huge problem for most people because people say it is. When someone misses a shot with english, they always say "it's because of deflection", when most of the time, they twisted their wrist, or grabbed the cue before impact, things like that. Deflection takes place when you try to force the cueball to do too much. When you try to do too much, the cueball is going to rebel. When you have a good stroke, you rarely have to force the cueball. There is no effort involved. Yes deflection happens even when you aim just a little bit outside of center, but the slight amount of compensation you do for it becomes just a natural part of how you line up for the shot and aim, so there really is no problem.

very very well said, and accurate. the more you try to coax the white, the more trouble you will get into, i agree. however, this is what i was saying, at high speeds, and long distances with maximum english, YOU WILL have deflection as sure as anything. special note, deflection is a matter of cuesport. meaning in snooker deflection is unheard of. they almost never is side spin, thus deflection is not an issue. in pool, english is used, half way, never really pooring it on, so deflection is a factor, but, you could compansate with different methods. in 3-cushion billiards, deflection is a major issue on almost every shot!!! maximum english is used on almost every shot, to the point of miscueing! they use very thick stiff shafts, to help them eliminate the problem.

Thick stiff shafts will only add to the problem, not help it
