Something I noticed about the Mosconi Cup

Its team USA vs team Europe right? Well it could just be me, but its several countries vs 1. Russia, England, Germany...you get the picture. Am I the first one to post on this? It seems it should be like the Davis cup in tennis or the Ryder cup in Golf, where you can have countries compete against each other, but just that different countries, not half of the world vs us, seems kinda unfair, even though we are ahead. Any thoughts.

I understand where you are coming from...I along with most other Americans don't care much about tennis anymore so I don't know about the Davis cup but the Ryder Cup is Team USA against Team Europe I think.

That's correct...

Europe is so hard to beat in the Ryder Cup... USA has more top 10 players, but struggles as a team...

personally i like the set up of the mosconi cup, usa and europe are basically the same size in area but europe has a greater population, we've won all of them but 2 and most of them in the past were held in europe, i think in the last few years this match up has become a lot closer than previous years and it won't be as easy for our players to run away with it like they've done so many times b4

in the 90's the davis cup in tennis could of been usa vs the world and we still would of been the favorite up until the later part of the decade, in tennis doubles is a lot more specialized than it is in pool or golf and the usa having the worlds #1 ranked doubles team was a big part why they won the davis cup this year

1 thing is for sure in all 3 sports america has historically been dominant up until the last decade or so, the rest of the world is catching up with us and even supassing us in some sports

The EURO'S can't hang in it's current format.

It would be a hollow victory to torture the winner of a tournament between the hapless BRITS, FINNS, GERMANS, etc., etc.

Besides, we can always change the game if they get competitive. It is pool, isn't it.;)

Whose ranking had several of the EURO players ranked in the worldwide top 20, which, IIRC only had one AMERICAN?

Good responses, my real point is I guess is that there seems to be enough talent in the countries that are represented in the Mosconi cup to have a whole team that is comprised of players from that country.

It would be more of an issue if USA didn't monkeystomp europe every year. I think our record is like 12-2?

It's like if we sent the best of the NBA to play vs the olympic basketball teams of europe in a tournament.

We should honestly start playing vs some of the asian countries like Taiwan, or China or Hong Kong. I'd say the philipines, but it would be boring to watch USA lose every year.

Exactly my point, we dont know. As they say in other sports, thats why we play the game. Because the patriots could lose, and basketball team USA hasn't faired all that great in international competition as of late, even though most of it is because of bad officiating and rule changes. But just like everyone is begging to have a playoff system in college football, we arent world champions until we beat the world. And I know the notion of phillipine players being really really great is really really popular right now and I know they are but, lets not confuse a lot of talented players in one country for the best players overall in the world. And we really dont know until we play. A phillipine doesn't win every international tourney they enter, a la the world championships. They have good showings....buuuut so did england, but I don't see people getting all hot and bothered about the British taking over pool. I just think if we are going to have a cup with international competition based on national affiliation, lets do all the nations and have a real tourney or a leauge even.

Oh wait....2 man teams. I was thinking more like 4 or 5 man teams. Then it would be way better than the mosconi cup, 2 man teams....nah good try, but not quite doing it for me. And now looking it up on youtube, Ive seen a few matches from the past and the 2 man team thing didn't really resonate with me as being a true exhibition of world team play, so thats why it didnt dawn on me immediately when you put the link up.

IIRC, the last I've witnessed a world team championships in pool that has 5
pool players from the same country playing together was way back 1993.
Team Philippines won it over Puerto Rico, I think...

Think of it as the United States of Europe - that's what it's turning into. It has a similar population. Sounds fair to me.

Remember the Ryder Cup used to be USA v, Great Britain and Ireland - the rest of Europe was not included. Used to be the US won almost every time. Not anymore obviously.

The whole point of competition is having some competition. If it's not worth winning it's not worth winning. If the boot had been on the other foot the competition would have died for lack of interest in Britain.
