If the goal is to bring in new viewers then make the game something viewers know - make them play 8-ball. It's funny how the two largest amateur leagues, the APA and BCA leagues, are mostly 8-ball leagues but the games televised and played by pros are often 9-ball/10-ball.
I think changing rules doesn't make it more exciting, it just confuses new viewers / casual viewers.
