Even though I don't live there, I've spent quite a bit of time in the area you're referring to.
Barney's is not a player's room.
Legend's has some of the best players and biggest gamblers in Houston. There are 3 9-Footers, and the players that play on them are there to gamble.
Slick Willie's in Monroe is a room you need to be careful at. The players are strong, the action can get big, and it's all Mexican and mostly one pocket. No one there is looking for a fair game or a sparring partner. They're looking to steal from you (literally and figuratively)
I would recommend Breakers in Webster (1 mile from NASA on Rd 1). There is some action, there are some quality players, there's a nice weekly tournament, the tables are in great condition, and the owner is very friendly. You'll be able to find many sparring partners there, and the atmosphere is great.
