Southwest

I have never seen or held a Southwest cue (in person) and don't know much about them.....

But I saw this in a statement from a seller of a Southwest on e-bay and it just didn't make much sense to me.

"You are bidding on a Southwest six point cue see pictures, the cue is in very good condition, it has a small wabble in the butt that is normal for 85% of SW cues......"

Could someone comment on this.

I don't know about a "wobble" in the butt, but the taper of a Southwest is such that I have noticed that you can see some light beneath the joint when just the butt is rolled on a table. I've noticed this in all 6 SW's I've looked at.

In other words, the butt is not a "straight" taper, but changes slightly. I'm no cuemaker, so this is undoubtedly a lousy explanation.

When Vince Tadesco sold me my first Southwest, he was trying to explain to me that you can easily identify a Southwest by sighting down the cue and looking for a particular taper (I still don't know what he was really trying to explain).

As far as a wobble, well that is BS, since no Southwest has a "wooble" when produced. When something comes out of a lathe, there should be no "wooble" unless the cue should warp over time.

Sorry,

Doug

SW cues have a parabolic taper. So do newer Rick Howards (I think). Zylr's also have a compound taper which is similar if not the same thing.

well, I 've seen plenty of sw cues from the collectors and some pro players in
taiwan, from my observation, I'll say this "wobble" thing is not uncommon, probably due to the condition of weather..... however even some brand new SW cues have same prob, dont know how, I've seen brand new( unchaked and unplayed) 05 SW cue warp a bit (butt) , and also the shaft, but the interesting thing is when you put them up in a whole, the cue is dead straight, dont know how these cues pass the QC before they got out of the factory.

I would have to see that 05 SW and I am certain that Laurie Franklin would also. If these cues were known to warp, etc, they would not be in demand as they are. While any cue can warp under certain circumstances, SW cues are known for superior quality of materials, construction, and playability.

There is no SW "factory", just Laurie, Marty and Al in a little place in Las Vegas. Laurie is the QC, and VERY little gets by her, IMHO.

Hey, the real issue is that because of the dual taper, when a cue is out, even the slightest, it shows more. Visibly the wobble looks worse than it probably is. I think that is why they do have a reputation as wobblers. It may not be entirely warranted, but people do use the phrase "the south west wobble".

Ive heard this

From what I understand they dont core any of their woods and maybe over time this may lead to warping of butts. Also Ive talked to cuemakers and Ive heard that weather effects cue and others say it doesnt. Who knows for sure?

well, I guess I should say when finished and passed the final inspection by Laurie, sorry for the missunderstanding. I've sent the email to Laurie cuz
I am curious about the criteria how cuemakers make the judgement on whether the cue is wobble or not....sometimes under certain situation, if the warp wont affect the playability , some cuemakers regard it as normal and no prob at all.
