specific joint on custom cue

Ok, while pondering and looking at custom cues, i am wondering since, so many cue makers tend to stay with a specific joint, phenolic, SS, ivory, or whatever it maybe.

If i want a specific joint type, like a SS 5/16 x14 or basically the same as a Schon SS joint, will most custom cue makers build a cue with a joint type of my liking?

I've been looking at like a Madden, or Gilbert, or a Josey. And notice most of them stay with the same type of joint on thier cues.

most will,,,,all should. look at it this way...they know every player has different tastes. while some are very strict about what they put out(gutierrez will say he only uses natural materials, no plastic, therefore no phenolic btw) etc etc,,,they have to understand their customer base.

joey gold does only one joint type. i respect his decision,,,if you buy a COGN you buy the hit.

most customers are not hands on enough about the cue's specs,,,,,they SHOULD be...from weight/balance/materials to picking their own shaftwood to shaft taper. if you do this, you can get exactly what you want from ANY cuemaker.

yea i know what you mean, i see alot of makers, going with the phenolic flat face, or the radial pin joint. Personally i dont like the hit of a phenolic flat face joint. I prefer a SS joint like the Schons.

But i did find somesone who i want to make me a cue (Michael Zimmerman) or Zims Rack, he is from AZ and his cues look nice and for a very decent price.

I just hope he can do a SS joint. lol

you're going for the feel are you not? ss is quite different. have you ever tried an ss COLLAR on a flatface. i have two and they are awesome. one is a very very thin ss collar/radial, and the other is an almost standard thick ss collar/3/8-10. obviously the thicker collar comes closer to a piloted ss joint's feel.

the thick ss collar with a 3/8-10 is normally VERY balance forward because of all that metal, but the cuemaker replaced the ss pin with an aluminum one.

it is an option you should consider. i think a few cuemakers offer this combo
 
Yes i am going for the Feel, And i like the way a Cue with a SS joint hits.

I havent tried the SS flat face combo, i dont think i have seen one.

I will say i am not to fond of the Phenolic flat face joint, or it could have just been the cue lol.

Well when i looked at Zims Cues, i noticed that all but once cue, he made was done with the phenolic joint. So i might just hafta deal with it lol.

Yes I do a stainless steel 5/16 14 joint. In fact that was my standard joint when I first started building cues --- because I liked it for my playing cues. But I have found that times have changed and most players now prefer the phenolic joint - so I make that as my standard - use 3/8 10. Also do 5/16 18 stainless, 3/8 11 brass, unilok (if requested).
