Sportsmanship

Here are some good comments for the following situations:

1) You 'upset' a good player in a tournament and he starts talking rudely about how much he would play you for in a cash game. Reply with "well you know I would, but, you see, I'm still in the tournament."

2) Like in the original post, an A+ or something complains about your handicap when you defeat him/her - the reply is, "Actually, I was thinking that maybe they have YOU rated too high."

(A buddy of mine said #1 to Mika once about 6 years ago and they still haven't spoken since)

That number two is hilarious. Unfortunately, I don't get to play in any handicapped tournaments to ever get a chance to use it...lol.

OK, so who was it? Are you talking about Carmen?

I'm not going to start naming names and accusing people on a forum. I'd do that face to face with him. I was just using this as an example to bring up the subject of sportmanship.

Part of it is also competative nature....If someone loses...I don't expect them to be "happy" ...I am never happy about "losing"...

But you can be unhappy and still be a good sport...I will shake hands and do the "good shooting" routine....(Unless the player "sharked" or "cheated" during a match) ....

RC,

I just went through the two sides of the coin between last weekend and tonight's league.

Last weekend, I won a match over a WPBA Touring Pro due to a bad table roll that probably could've been diagnosed as a bad situation prior to the shot. She was maddder than heck. I thought it was directed at me, but it definitely wasn't. Now I realize that. I just have to learn how to handle talking to a player that is mad at themselves and just probably walk away.

Tonight in the APA league, I had to play a 9 and I'm now rated a 5 for 9-ball. The table conditions are the worst in the world and I really did fail to acknowledge my oppnent's runouts when I threw everything at him but the kitchen sink. His first name must've been "MULE" because he kicked and just about hit at all of my snookers. But the table was giving me fits and I regret not being more sociable.

I really do try to acknowledge my opponent's accomplishments, and tonight I did, but not often enough. I was just mad at myself and I really hate the table I have to play on.

From playing on prefectly re-clothed B/GCIII with Simonis to a crap VFW-kept table tonight really takes my enjoyment out of the game for the team. And they just don't understand.

Barbara
