Spotting illegally made balls?

Most league rules nowadays say something like, "All balls pocketed illegally or any object balls knocked off the table stay down. How is this fair if you are playing for points (one point for each ball made)?
Back in the '70s I was playing in a nice team event, when my opponent needed only one ball to win the team match. I played a nice safety on his last ball, placing the white behind one of my set. My opponent was a crafty old veteran, and he proceeded to simply pocket his ball with an illegal combo and won the match! It didn't seem fair, but the rule was that the pocketed ball stayed down and counted for the winning point!
In my humble opinion, any balls illegaly pocketed or knocked off the table should be spotted! You should never be able to win a game or a match on a fouled shot.

If your playing in the APA 9 ball rules then the rule states THAT ANY BALLS POCKETED DURING A FOUL the point doesn't count. The ball stays down and you get ball in hand. How can you win a game while shooting a foul. What kind of league was that in that back in the day?

As much as I agree with you about the rules being unfair, I have potted a ball illegally (a combo like you stated above) because my team only needed one ball for the match.

Until the rules for league play are changed this will continue to be the case. :frown:

the only format that i know where you score by ball count in league is apa 9 ball, and in apa 9 ball the ball stays down but is a dead ball no point awarded.

I was refering to VNEA leagues. They also have BCA in our town and I thought the rules were the same but I am not sure.

LOL no, but when I am in a team tournament and we only need one ball I will do what needs to be done to get it. In this case it was make a combo with the opponents ball. He got ball in hand and won the game but we moved to the next round. I played within the rules.
