Stack leather

I was just wondering why a lot of custom cue makers do not like to use stack leather. I have spoken to a lot of cuemakers about a design that I have that will have a stack leather wrap but all of them said that they do not like to use stack leather but when asked they didnt give me an answer. The only person that I have seen use stack leather wraps is Troy Downey and thats it. What are the negatives for using or working with stack leather?

I have a Tiger Stack Wrap on my Cue & it's wonderful. I've had it on my Cue since August 2002. I'm a believer...

One reason Cue makers might shy away is this, once a leather Wrap is on there, you can't go back to Linen.

Although I use no wrap on my stick, I did, indeed, try a stacked leather grip on someone else's cue and it felt fine.

Its not that they dont like to use leather, they have cues with leather wraps, its just that they dont use stack leather. I have always wondered why I guess ill just have them make it with linen and then have it rewrapped

ceebee, why do you think you can't go back to linen after a stack wrap? Because, you most certainly can. Stack wraps do not require any larger wrap groove than linen, so there is no reason it can't be removed and linen put back on.

My 2 cents

I really see no negatives to a stack wrap. As Todd said, it doesn't require a larger groove than for linen, whereas regular leather does. The stack wrap weighs identical to linen once it's on, so your cue weight doesn't change, regular leather does. You can always go back to linen after stack wrap. I have two cues with them and they feel good.

the one negative thing that i have heard about leather in general that if it is dyed a different color, it may bleed if your hands sweat alot. I dont know if it is true just what i have heard

Because it's a pain in the jazz to install.
Way too much work.:D
Heck, you might as well have a sprayed on linen wrap.
I wonder if it's much thicker than regular linen or leather wrap.

it's my understanding that the process for installing a stack leather wrap is time consuming and labor intensive. for what a cuemaker would have to charge to justify the amount of work it is not worth it.

Linen and split leather are about the same thickness, .020....
Stacked leather to me just does not look good. All of us have differant opinions about it. Just do not care for it.

A friend of mine who makes and repair cues refuses to do another one.
Too much sanding, work prep etc.

Your really should try a custom stick without any wrap. That setup offers great friction and my hand doesn't seem to perspire as much. Dunno' why, either.

Why do you say that once a leather wrap is on the cue you cannot go back to a linen wrap? I put leather on my cues, and so do many others and the leather can be removed and replaced with linen.

I think he meant that the leather was his now "new" choice, and he would not go back to linen.

I heard the one piece leather is best because the stacked ones do not hold the integrity as well. Is this true?
