Stained glass light a bad idea?

I have an opportunity to get a really nice custom hand made stained glass light for my new 8' table, but have a few questions / concerns. I've seen alot of antique lights that look similar to what i wanna do, but have never seen them hung in any pool room, only on e-bay or craigslist pics. Why is this? are they too fragile, or do other lights work so much better that this style is no longer used?

If i do end up going ahead with this, can anyone recomend a good ballast setup i can look into? Are 4' bulbs going to be long enough? if so, how many and what kind should i use?

thanks!

I find the light coming through the stained glass to be a distraction. This is nice as a decoration but not for serious billiards.I want all the light on the felt, not in my face.

Pool Table Lighting

Stained Glass Pool lights are a bit fragile, but they are attractive. Light does it's own thing, it is used or it is lost. The loss of light through the glass will be nice to look at, but it can be distracting & it will light up the room.

A good Pool Table Light usually distributes light down on to the Pool Table...

gah, i hadn't even thought about the light loss through the glass. looks like i'll either build one to match the table or just buy one. anyone know a decent page on building a light for 48" bulbs?

thanks yet again
