Staining veneered points

Just reading comments on veneered versus recut points and it reminded me of a problem I've been trying to cope withfor years.

What is the best way you have come up with to keep stain off of veneers when staining a Maple or other wood prong for that matter that has veneered points. I've used a number of different options but am not happy with any.

Anybody got any tricks they're willing to share?

I have had good luck, masking off the points & spraying the stain with my airbrush. Be sure the tape is down tight & then spray away from the edge of the tape, not into it. I also use a Q-TIP that I blot nearly dry & brush away from the tape edge...JER
