I am replacing a cheapo cue my wife uses which she got a Job lot with a better quality production cue for a Xmas present: The African Gecko by mcdermott
http://www.mcdermottcue.com/PAGES/05%20Cues/Tournament/AfricanGecko.htm

Any ideas as to what weights are good for women? I looked at her old cue and it doesn't have the weight on it but imagine it is 19 0z. Would 18 oz be better. I know weight can be taken off or added later but just want to avoid the hassle if possible.

Personally, I think the weight/length of a cue is more in relation to the game than it is the player. However, there are some great players who will quickly disagree with me on that. Regardless, most amateurs and professionals (regardless of sex) seem to be comfortable between 18 and 19 oz. I wouldn't go higher or lower than this range and would likely try and stick to the same weight she had before. If she were using a 19, stick with 19.

Stick

There are some women that prefer a heavier cue, and
I have learned that you can not assume that just because
they are a woman that a lighter cue is right for them.

Has she made any comments about the one she has now?
(being butt heavy or is she having trouble with staying on
her bridge?)

How a cue is balanced is just as important as its weight.

Before you buy, I would suggest you find out the balance point
of the cue.

I,myself, have always like a heavier cue, and shot with 21 oz
until about 6 years ago when I went to a 20.2 oz which I am
comfortable with.

Not knowing your wife, I would say stay with a 19 oz..

no answer to this one.

Women and cue weights. BAH!

Player preference is all there is (there is no woman/man stuff in cue weight) . If she likes the weight of the one she is using now, why change that? You can always buy a cue that can be changed by adding bolts in the butt. Joss is always a great way to go. This just my opinion. Good Luck!

Sorry, I have to comment from a woman player's point of view. Go for an 18. The lightness will help her hand speed. Also make sure it has a full pro taper, so she doesn't have to adjust her bridge on the follow-through. I would also have the butt and shaft made smaller if possible, if she has small hands.

christopheradam !!!!

u stole my idea  .... let me know how the cue plays. if u would ever sell it, let me know. im VERY interested in one, but i find the new price a bit high just because it has a gecko on it. but im 10000000000% sure she would LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

edit: i still think the M5-4B looks alot nicer then the M5-4A... on the A it looks like it was just painted over it with black inkt. on the B version at least u can see the actual inlays. love the 4B.

I showed my wife pictures of the 54A and the 54B a while ago and she loved how the 54A(african gecko) looked, better than the 54B(Green Gecko). I lean towards the African gecko myself also.

I hear what your saying about the new price of it. I searched all over the net for a used one, and couldn't find any. It doesn't help I just slipped on some ice with my car on Thanksgiving day and really messed up my whole front end and have a $2500 + bill for repairs. So if anyone has any info on a used African Gecko Cue. Drop me an email, chrismichaeladams@yahoo.com or pm me. If anyones got a few of them, drop Solartje a PM too :)

Thanks for the comments and opinions about weights of cues for women.
I will probably just go with the 19oz since that is what her current cue probably is.
Like Bob Byrne says, "Give me a broom stick with a good tip, I'll shoot some good pool, and sweep up the joint afterwards" or something like that, :)

Since you are looking at McDermott's, please be aware that should the weight you get not be to her liking, that it can be easily changed up or down.
BTW, the reason alot of beginner women tend to prefer heavier cues is because it tends to straighten their stroke out a bit. I started with a 20.5 oz cue way back when, and am now down to my preferred 19.25 oz.

Hey Solartje,
Have you seen this cue? The Spalted Gecko. What do you think of it?

http://www.gameroomsusa.com/m23a.html

This one on ebay looks different from the one from gameroomusa.

Ebay Gecko

yes i had seen it to. but i would NEVER EVER buy this cue!!!

just check the wrap on it!!! they had to kill a poor little cute lisard just cuz some guy can go brag he has a expensive wrap!! nah never ever.

and even if i would buy it for my girl, she'd do the same thing to me as the cuemaker did to that poor little lisard. i would get OWNED!!

i cant imagine , someone who likes lisards, gecko's etc (probably the only buyers of these cues) who would buy one with a lisard wrap. its contradicting.
