Standardized equipment

The use of (or lack thereof) standardized equipment keeps coming up in pool debates.

So, I decided to list all the other sports that benefit from a standardized "field of play."

1. Football. Oops, Lambeau Field and New Orleans Superdome.

2. Baseball. Are any two baseball fields the same size? Grass and astroturf.

3. Tennis. Not even close: Clay, grass, HardTrue and dozens of other surfaces.

4. NASCAR. Length, shape, fast track, slow track, high bank turns, low bank turns.

The only two I could come up with were hockey and basketball, although I'll bet the pros (and knowledgeable fans) could go on and on about the differences of one venue vs. another.

Bottom line is that pros and amateurs in nearly every sport have to deal with various fields of play. It's part of being proficient in the sport.
