Starting out in Money Games

Why play for money at all? You don't seem very sure if you want to gamble, or for how much, and it doesn't seem that you have much to lose.

Betting on pool can kill your love for the game. The good pool gamblers tend to be people who play pool so that they can bet, not the other way around. If you want to play under pressure, how about jumping in some local tournaments, or playing for table time?

Betting on pool never killed my love of the game. It enhanced it. Playing for time and in tournaments didn't get my blood moving and didn't help my concentration, untill Years later, if at all. I've always played better for money.

If you are scared to lose to cash, you might not want to gamble.
I have had to eat ramen noodles and water for too many times because I should have been scared and was too pissed up to realize it.
I usually got it back next week before I got pissed up.
I think that sometimes you need to put yourself in a position of PAIN if you lose to develope that mental toughness that you are going to need later on as you progress. I have played too many people that were better than me that could not handle the shots when their wallets depended on it and I took down the cash. But I lost my A$$ more than once getting to that frame of mind.

I disagree. I think most good pool players gamble to test themselves, to see if they can do it when it counts.

I would have to disagree, the best players I know are all willing to gamble and some won't play with out at least a drink or something on the game! I do know some folks that are more gamblers than players but they tend to quit on pool rather fast! The really good players want to have the pressure of the bet to push their best game out and most feel that by betting they are at least making the other players pay for their lessons! I have found that the money on the line enhances my concentration and makes it a much better match ! I shoot mainly now in tourneys since most of the gamblers that will play me are only the ones that can beat my azzs !:p
