Hello, I was just wondering how hard it is to install a steel joint on a cue. I know about how to cut a tenon and install the collar I guess my question is how do you get the finish to match up. Do you leave the wood alittle undersize and build up the finish to match the collar and if so how hard is that. Any steps you guys could help me with would be great. Thanks.
well my SS joint are 5x8-11. there are more then one type. i cut my tenon .580 thread it glue it up. SS joints are straight .860od so you will need to taper it. i personally taper my ss joint on the cue with my router and a reg router bit taking very small lite passes. some use a single edge. some taper off the cue then glue. i like to do it all together. it chews up the joint good but then i sand with 220 joint only no wood! every minute or so i cool it down with a ice cube. this is key! i taper it rough to .855 then finish sand size is .850
and yes i undercut the wood to accept finish and help a smoother transition
jerry -r- learned me the ice cube trick. cant take credit for that so i give it where its due!
