I test for straightness in a variety of ways. Rolling it obviously and rolling it; 'everything past the joint' hanging over the rail out in thin air. This second trick I learned from a post here a while back. Thank you whoever you are. In a sporting goods store with nothing flat but the floor, I drop the cue as vertically as possible onto the tip. The bounce is a pretty good indicator of how it'll hit.
Online is a different matter. I got lucky with Amazon and got a laser straight one but that was only a 40 dollar risk.
With production cues, how do you get a perfectly straight one? What can you ask customer service to maximize your chances? Are certain brands better bets? I know many have long or lifetime warranties that cover warpage but nothing covering initial straightness.
