Stoke Speed Help!

My speed control is horrible, every time I play a good player and there are a lot of good players from Columbus Ohio, they tell me that I am hitting the ball way too hard. Here is the problem, how can you get a good stroke through the cue ball without using much speed at all? If speed and strength of stroke goes down what must be done to get a stroke on the CB rather than rolling the CB, when is rolling the CB appropriate?

You need to work on your basic speed skills. Try the progressive practice drills here: http://www.sfbilliards.com/progpract.pdf

Most beginners fail to hit the cue ball far enough from center for stroke (spin) shots, and consequently have to hit the ball very hard to get any spin on it. Often the problem is failure to chalk properly. Check your tip before you shoot any spin shot.

Speed

Make sure you are still accellerating throught the cue ball on the softer shots. This concept may throw you off but you just start your stroke a little slower than you want and gradually be accellerating throughout the stroke. If you are slowing down then you will not get a good stroke.

Throw all the balls out on the table and try shooting each one (without the cueball) into the pockets - but shoot soft enough that the ball doesn't touch the back (or sides) of the pocket. Once you go through a couple racks and have a better feel for the speed then use the cueball with ball in hand each shot and run a few racks at the same speed - barely getting to the pocket and falling in.
