One good drill I have heard that will help straight pool is to put all 15 balls on the table with no clusters and none close to the rail, then take ball in hand and try to run them off without letting the cueball touch the rail. It is designed to help you read patterns to look for stop shots and shots that dont require alot of cueball movement.

14-1 practice

I have about 5 or 6 serious drills that I practice each day, but I use a warm up before doing the drills. I scatter 4 balls at the foot end, ball in hand and run them. If I miss one, the four go up again until I run them. Then 5 balls scattered, ball in hand and run them. If I miss, he 5 go back up. I do the until I've run up to 9 balls, then I'm really warmed up. It works for me because it gets me accustomed to playing position on a gradual level. After this, the drills are easier. Not wanting to start any set over is an incentive for me to think of the shot, and where the cb has to stop to get the next shot. It has really helped me recently with the cb speed control, which I believe is the most important fundamental in assuring another shot. If you get the speed control down, you'll be a happier camper. Speed control rules. I can't exaggerate on how much this has helped me recently, and I'm a sad 14-1 player.

I remember some great player telling that he sometimes practised straight pool by throwing 4 balls on the table and trying to play position for the break. If you're not a top player, use 5 or 6 balls.
