Straight Pool High Run - just a matter of time

This goes out mainly to Straight Pool players. I have a high of 47 which I did early this year. I've just got back into Straight after six months. Do you ever feel that you KNOW you have made a jump in improvement, and it's 'just a matter of time' before you get your high? I feel like that right now. My game improved during that six months (9-ball), but now I can see the patterns better and I just know I am playing more accurate Straight Pool. I ran an almost flawless 40 last night, and I hope to report breaking 50 in the next month! It's just a matter of time :)

Congratulations, Tim! I know you'll be running a hundred in no time!

I feel the same in these days. Maybe starting reading Capelle's book (not yet half) is helping my focus on the game, I'm running in the 30's-60's almost every time I play and I feel I'll break the 100 wall very soon (and I'll have a beer paid by a Finnish friend of mine... ;) ...)

I remember when I first started to really run balls well, and a friend of mine made me read an article on the law of averages as your run increases and it screwed me up for months!. I'd get to 50 and think, man, to get to 75 is like 200 to 1 chance or whatever it was at the time! Took me a long time to forget that whole deal. Now I just say, I have an equal chance to make EVERY ball I shoot at, and that helps me get along............Gerry

Yeah, I mean if I played all the time, I'd get a 60 or 70 just by the sheer volume of attempts. What I feel is that my AVERAGE has gone up which for me is a more important indicator. The high run will just happen naturally. I'm trying to fit in one practice session a week so the high run can only be broken on a Tuesday :)

And hi Marissa :)

Hoboken-man,
The feeling you are experiencing is well known to optimists all over the world - its "hope springs eternal" (very common in Cubs fans, unknown to pessimists). As a noted pool instructor said, "optimism and confidence without the skill to back it up is just bravado."

It sounds like you are taking the proper steps to "back it up". As long as you are taking steps to improve your shotmaking, position play, level of precision in ball-striking, and knowledge of the intricacies of 14.1 then I think your chances of success are high. Good luck.

P.S. - Is your goal to run the 50/100 or is it to beat other players at straight pool? Proper safety play is fairly important in competition, but does not really enter into this ball-running fixation from which many of us suffer.

P.P.S. - I know your feeling, my game is improving by leaps and bounds - and I find that it gives you a much greater appreciation for those players that can "rain hundreds" in the words of Jim Rempe - those guys are GOOD.

I just thought of something, maybe trying to run 100 and getting to 60 or 70 is the wrong way to look at it. I'm going to try to run 250! and getting to 100/110 should be relatively easy right?:).................G

I think it is more than bravado. I experience that every four years when the country believes England can win the World Cup THIS TIME. In fact, it's already started.

It's really just to improve. High run/average run at Straight Pool seems to be an accurate way to gauge my current level of ability. I love the game of Straight Pool. I play in a Friday night League where I can use safety play.

i find the most encouraging sign that you will break your high is if you are running more consistantly. for your speed, it would be consistant mid to high teens. if you are doing this, you will chop down that high run you currently have.
