Hi All,
Zion Zvi and Ryan McCreesh earn qualifying spots in the World Straight Pool Championships.
Bill & Billies CueSport in Arnold, MD held a qualifier yesterday (and early today!) for the upcoming World Straight Pool tournament in East Brunswick, New Jersey. Congratulations on a well organized event run by straight pool enthusiast Peter Burrows with the help of Ceci Strain and the staff of Bill & Billies. The room added $2500 and stayed open to let the event finish in one day. This room really supports pool.
A full field of 32 players signed up. Honorary players Willie Mosconi and Irving Crane were on the chart but did not show. The other 30 players battled it out starting bright and early Saturday morning at 9:00. Races were to 125 on the winner side and 100 on the one loss side. The top 2 players received entry into the big event in the first week of June.
I played a newcomer in the second round Zion Zvi. After his first shot, I knew he could play a little. I got up a couple racks but then he ran 34 to get back in it. He didn't close me out and I almost caught up but lost 125-115. I really dogged a secondary break shot with 10 to go that I'll remember painfully for quite a while.
Zion just arrived in the US from Israel a few days ago and found out about the tournament from a couple players at Amsterdam Billiards in New York. After my match he seemed to settle in and defeated AZ forum member Mapman72 and then Ed Moody who played well after a 30 year absence from straight pool. Zion defeated Ryan "Genie Man" McCreesh in the final in what I understand was a fun match to watch. I believe it was close like 125-118 or so.
I played well in my next few matches defeating Pat O'Neill, Buddy Chilton and Sueyen Rhee. I started out with Ed Deska taking a 28 to -2 lead but this is one tough customer. After leading 48-19 he outscored me 63-1 to take control of the match. I closed a little but lost 100-66 I think. Eddie then beat Ed Moody and Mike Davis to take on Ryan McCreesh for the final qualifying spot.
This final match began at 3:45 in the morning just slightly past my bedtime so I don't know how it went but I called B & B and they said that Ryan won.
