Straight Pool Skill Test

Hey Bruin, what's up?,,,,14-1 here either. I'm glad I never asked you to play 14-1!!! You got me terrified!!!

rick,,,i hope you understand that the ABCD i refer to is for 9ball. there's no such rating for 14.1...
most of the guys i know are low B's 9ballers, and their high runs are from mid 40's to mid 50's, and i know a high B who has run about 60.

you'd be surprised at how cut and dried the deliniations are.

Yes, the equipment etc. were different in the old days. IMHO, in the old days, they played much more straight pool, that's why many high runs were made at the time. I think Mosconi's 526 would be easily broken if Efren, Feijen, Hohmann, Archer, Bustamante, Yang, Immonen etc. would learn the secrets of 14.1 and play only that for a year or two. At least Engert has made a verified run of 492 or so....

And yes, Europe has many killer straight pool players :) Too bad they rarely organize the 14.1 US Open or similar tournaments for world class 14.1 -players...

I find this hard to believe.
I would've thought Mosconi's average was higher than these...

mjantti,,,,it only takes a couple o'more safeties to drop the average drastically. the inning averages are mostly dependent on the # of safeties because really, these guys don't miss.

i would LOVE to see all the snooker players play 14.1

mosconi's run would become a sidenote.

Hello Mikko. Maybe something is different between the old and new tournaments that affects averages. Maybe the modern players are that much better. Whatever it is, it looks like Europe has a healthy 14.1 scene.

the old equipment was horrendous. balls didn't spread easily like today's aramith. i don't think they had simonis, did they? maybe the rails were crap. i think an old timer could answer these q's.......

Yes, I know. I have also averaged over 10 in single matches and didn't miss rather any balls and was forced to play a couple of safeties. The true concept of "average" is a little bit blurry to many people. Take 3-cushion carom for instance. Ask any decent player without carom background about the average they think they are playing and then prove that they can easily cut their average in half or at least deduct quite a lot of it by playing a few matches with a piece of paper to mark all innings.

There is a difference playing 14.1 on a pool hall table with tight pockets and worn cloth compared to European Championships with new cloth and clean & polished balls. The force required to break the rack open / to break some balls loose is tremendously lower in perfect conditions...
