Strange question about wood for a cue.

Right now I wouldnt be ready to have a custom cue made but in the future its possible. My question is more regarding the wood used for the butt end. My dad has a fairly large slab of mahogony in the basement. Would mahogony be ok to use in making a cue or would the characteristics of the wood make it less desireable? I assume any dense wood would work? What does one look for on a wood to make acue other than natural designs and or grain? Also how large of a piece would a blank be cut out of?

This is of course probable over simpilizing what you all do but I picture a blank being ripped out of a piece of wood say 4 inches by 4 inches and then put on a lathe to make it round and go from there to bing down the spot for the wrap and any inlays?

Thanks in advance for any information. Also any photos of mahogony cues would be awesome.

If you want a mahogony butt sleeve, you can make it out of mahogony. It isn't a common wood used in cue building. I don't have any photos of any mahogony butts but I do have a photo of a walnut butt. Walnut is another wood you don't see in cue building but the wood I had was a beautiful piece and great grain. Will try to post it for you.

These are definitely some gorgeous cues! I imagine that you really dont know what you will end up with grain wise until you rib it down and spin it though. Thank you for the examples guys and the websites are a great help too. Im one of those people whom likes to know everything about how things work or are made and you guys made my day offering in progress shots from your sites!
