stroke development question and my issues

as a drill
if you put an object ball very close to the rail
and the cue ball the same very close to the rail
and you try to hit stop shots or follow the cue ball into the pocket
the advantage of this set up to me is you can watch to see if your shaft stays parallel to the rail
during your forward and back stroke
so you can see if your take back or follow thru is off line
now for the question
if i do this and once ive lined up and stepped into the shot and am down at address
and from there only look at the cue ball
for my warm up strokes/set/ /backstroke/forward stroke
im pretty pure as to the results
meaning no unintentional spin and a good number of perfect stop shots...
when i do the same drill looking at the object ball
at address and set
l am not as consistent....:banghead:
why do you think that is

fwiw
as an aside
i tried doing the same drill
using more of a snooker stance
although my weight distribution
was too much on my right leg
it seemed to improve my success when looking at the object ball

If you're going to look at the object ball last, you have to incorporate a routine where you periodically look at the tip at the cue ball during your practice strokes. You can't set your bridge hand correctly on the table and the tip at the cue ball without looking at it.

Take your time. Don't rush the process because your eyes need a second or two to refocus.

thanks for taking the time to answer
when i come down at address thats when i look to see if im lined up right and where the cue tip is
as i take 2-3 warm up strokes im only looking at the cue ball /cue tip placement
then i set and shift my gaze to the object ball for a few seconds to get "quiet eyes"
then pull back and shoot and fininsh

It sounds like you're doing something sub consciously that you're not picking up on in your self-analysis.

Try to find someone to stand with you and watch you shoot, looking at the cue ball last and then looking at the object ball last. The difference is probably subtle, but enough to cause you to miss. You really should be looking at the object ball last.

will do

It sounds to me like you stroke more accurately when you use the rail as a guide because you can measure the accuracy of your delivery parallel to the rail. It's likely you are altering your natural delivery to match a parallel line with the rail. It basically ensures a true delivery.

It isn't as effective without the rail because your stroke is not pure and you have no reference line to measure a true, straight delivery.

Sounds like you need "laser guidance" for your stroke because it's not reliably repeatable.

You may have to change your stance in some way to find the position that's most conducive to a straight, repeatable, relaxed forearm swing along your line of sight. Elbow position (how far from body) is a likely place to start. If you change that it may be necessary to slightly change the angle you face to match.

I practice seeing the shaft in my peripheral vision to monitor my stroke no matter where my focus is, so after I've targeted the tip/CB contact it's easier to keep my stroke from straying.

You are probably not as consistent because the object ball is further way and thus your aim appears different so you are making sub conscience changes in the final stroke to get your aim on the object ball instead of the closer cue ball.
Do what you do and then close your eyes before you go back and stroke for the final time. This will tell you if you are trying to make sub conscience changes as you make your final stroke as you will be trusting what you see at that point.

closing my eyes or ive or my house pro would put a sheet of paper mid way between cue balland object ball after i got down and set
both variations high success rate
