I wonder how many pool players actually have their vision checked after the age of 40 on a regular basis.

It may depend on what insurance if any they have to cover the costs. Also some people just never have any problems with their vision.
I never had a problem and never needed glasses till my mid fifties. Then I just started to need bifocals. I am 71 now and have gone in for eye exams at least every two years since then. I use Snookerspex glasses for pool. Regular glasses just don't even come close when playing pool.

There are a few different places online for getting billiard glasses if you do a search for them.
