table height

Is there a standard for the height of the "playing surface" of a pool table?
WPA specs for pool table surface height say 29" - 31". I can tell you that 29" is certainly on the low end and 31" is on the high end. It's amazing a difference an inch or two can make in table heighth. I would say right in the middle of that range - 30" is what you'd like to have.

Thanks, I was thinking30, but wanted to make sure.

i can tell you no doubt the height matters. i know of several strong players 5'6 and under. they just see the table better and easier with not having to bend over as far.

my father in law had a valley 8ft table on a cart because he had to be able to move it from time to time. the playing surface had to be at least 36 inches high. i'm 6ft, play pretty good. it was so much easier, comfortable to play and see the lines.

i play at a pool room. they have a GC 2, legs cranked all the way down. i can barely play on it. it hurts my neck, i can't bend over far enough to see the lines well.

one reason i love the diamonds, they seem to sit higher than other tables.

the advantage is so huge for shorter players, it's almost unfair. if you've seen Mikey McClain play, you know what I mean.

I definitely notice a difference when going from my home Diamond to a Valley BB.
The Valley might only be an inch or two lower but it seems like a LOT more.
...
With floor that slopes slightly (basement / garage) and a level table, you obviously get one side that is a little higher too.

The advantage for shorter players is almost unfair is so true. I am 6'2 and playing on a table with a 29in. surface height like Valleys kills my back in a very short time, but when I play all day on Diamonds no problem.

When the table height was set, way back when, the average height was 5 ft 7.5 inches.

...but if you think like a golfer, and set up around your cue, most problems disappear.
...I skunked a great player in a snooker tournament once..the table height was about
27 inches...his ass was higher than his head 'cause he was wired to his style...
...my head was just higher off the cue....he only made about 30 points in four games.

Thank you for your input. I have always set up very low, but never thought about the golfer thing. That sounds like worth trying. I'm going to take a look at that tomorrow when I go to practice.
