Table identification

A friend is thinking of having this table recovered but doesn't know the manufacturer

Looks like a National, from Ohio.

Why would that stop him from getting it recovered?

Is it slate? That's the real question

I've yet to see the table, to see the condition of the slate and what not. Not that I'm any expert. He was just curious to whom the manufacturer was. I figured someone here would know
