Table Lighting Help...

My grandfather has an eight footer in his basement, and were always complaining about how suck ass the lighting is, it's a nice common, stylish three piece cheap light, but it illuminates the table horribly.

I was wondering if anyone knew an efficient light, that's also stylish, for the 300 buck and under range? any ideas and reviews on lighting that has actually been used would be very helpful! thanks in advance!

Jay

Jay, that light looks similar to the one I have over my table at home. Have you tried experimenting with different types of bulbs to give you better results. I know it took me 4 different kinds of bulbs before I found one that I liked to use.

It would be a cheaper solution than buying another light.

i have tried higher watt bulps and those weird swirly energy efficient bulbs. but that's just about it.

I use the energy efficient ones but I had to go pretty high up on the size to get good lighting for the table.

Do a search of this forum on building it yourself. Seen some really nice ones built using cheap 8 foot fluorescent fixtures and then adding some 1x6 or 1x8 's (Pine or Oak depending on how much you want to spend) around it. After staining and adding a diffuser, they look very professional at a very minimal investment (about $100 or so). Good luck in your quest.

A lot of people mount the lights too high from the surface of the table. You can spend over $1,000 on a 3 light system with stained glass etc, but it's still the same 3 light bulbs providiing the light. Of course, you could go to a 4 light system or a flourescent style light system, but many MANY people use a 3 light system and are fine with it. Either it's the bulbs you are using or it's mounted too high imo.

On a somewhat related note, I've always wanted to try the LED style light bulbs and see how much brighter they are.

Those 3 bulb light systems are pretty bad. Especially for an old guy like me. Can you get a 4bulb 6 or 8 ft Fluorescent on the ceiling?

I have searched and can't find any DIY plans for building a light. Any links? I'd be interested in building a nice light for my table. I thought about buying the ebay fixtures, but if I can make something nicer I'll do it.

If not, I'll buy the Ebay one because I figure it's just a light fixture, bulbs would be the only thing that would change the brightness. You can buy 150w equivalent CFL's at home depot now that are huge and I can GUARANTEE that you will get enough light. You might go blind!

Thanks for all the insight guys!

Now i think about it, higher wattage and LOWERING the light rig might just do it!

Try using florescent flood lights. About $11 each at home depot but well worth it. Lights it up! !!

Pool table Light

Here is one I made... I'll sell it for $250.00

It is made for a 9 footer, I have a Bar Box now.

Send me a PM
