Has anyone experimented with the small recessed halogens or LED's to illuminate their home table?

With the kitchen remodel, we went with the 5" recessed halogens. The ceiling is 10', and these put out a fair amount of light with few shadows. I've cut many tomatoes without dismembering myself, so I'm pretty confident these might work, but not sure if they'll be bright enough.
The room where the table will reside has has 9' ceilings, and these type of lights have a significantly higher wife acceptance factor (WAF) than everything we've seen so far. I'm sure a number of these will be needed, but don't know the best place to start.
