How many players have played on a diamond table and asked themselves what makes a Diamond table faster than a gold Crown. I play on both tables every week, and would like to know if anyone can tell me why the diamond table plays so much faster that a Gold Crown.

These are some of the reasons that i have heard in the past. Are they Myth or Fact? You tell me.

Diamonds Play Faster Because......
1. because the slate is thicker 1 1/4" as Compared to 1"
2. because they are equipped with K-55 profile cushions, where as a Gold Crown is equipped with K-66 Profile cushions.
3. because the Tournament Blue 860 Simonis Cloth plays faster that the traditional green 860 Simonis Cloth.
4. because the slate is one piece on most of the diamonds as compared to three pieces on a gold crown.
5. because the Diamond table slate is not backed, Gold Crowns have backing.

Myth or Fact? Anyone

Diamonds do not play faster, they may rebound differently because Brunswick uses Super Speed cushions and Diamonds use Artemis (both are K-55 profile) but if both tables are set up brand new right next to each other the speed of the cloth will be identical.

It's probably the way the tables were individually set up. The way the cloth is stretched makes a huge difference in the speed.

I gotta agree with everyone else because the diamonds in the pool room here are actually slower then the brunswisks.

Ditto on that.

I attended school at UCLA, and they had 6 Diamond 9-footers that all played like crap. It wasn't the tables, but rather how they were maintained. Meanwhile if you went a few miles West to the House of Billiards in Santa Monica, the GC IIIs there played perfect. Tight pockets, fast cloth, good rails. If I'm not mistaken, Ernesto Dominguez (and Oscar?) does the tables there and thank god for that!
