Taig Lathe?

Good morning all.

I thought this may be the appropriate place to post this. If not, just point me in the direction :)

I am budgeting to get me a small lathe in Feb to use for tipping, ferrules, ect. I have been looking at a run of the mill Taig with self centering 3 jaw chuck. I already have a lathe for wrap work, ect. Just wanted a stand alone for tipping.

Any pitfalls I should be aware of with the Taig? Any other suggestions around the same money ($400ish?)

Regards,
~Roy

Get one long enough....48".

You won't be able to put the shaft through the head stock so....

Get a steady rest for shafts...... from Chris H
Get a set of common maintenance pins
Concave and 60deg live centers.

Don't get a cheesy motor.... get a DC variable speed of at least 1/3 hp

Just a few things............. there are lots more.........

Thanks a bunch everyone. Kim, the diameter was definately a concern of mine. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I appreciate everyone's responses and will jump up to Todds site tonight after work.

All you are using it for is a tip lathe
I made the top one for about 300 from taig parts and stuff I had laying around
I was using the Harbor Freight lathe for tips before
But I like tinkering with or making stuff like that
Otherwise I agree with every one else and get Todds basic lathe for about 500 shipped

I have Todds larger lathe that I will be changing the motor on soon once I make up some brackets

You can build your own but, a ready made setup with all the accessories is a lot easier. Yes it is a more expensive but it will do everything you want.

See Hightower or Todd..........
