Tailstock offset on metal lathes?

I'm fairly new to cue building and looking for a fairly cheap way to offset my tailstock. I have a 1950 something Clausing lathe and using the two bolts to do it just isn't going to be feasible. Best option I've found thus far is to use these parts:

3" Enco 22-1530 $57.95
#3 MT Enco Boring head shank 22-1210 $35.65
Riten 3/4" straight shank live center 240-2831 $219.76

Now, this options costs me a total of $313.36 which seems kind of high for what simple little thing I'm trying to do. Mainly cause I haven't found a cheaper live center with a straight shank.

I'm just wondering if anyone else out there has a better and/or cheaper option.

Thanks for any advice,

I've got a couple set-ups like you describe only I have about 25% of that amount of money tied up. Get your head and shank on one of the e-bay machinery stores for around 60 or 70.00 total. For the live center just go to Sears and get one for the tail stock of a wood lathe for 14.95. I leave one set up for turning tapered prongs and another for cutting channels for half/splice cues.

Sears Live Center

Dick,

That's exactly what I was hoping for. Does Sears sell a straight shank live center or have you somehow adapted a MT center to fit the boring bar?

Thanks Again,
Scott

The one Sears sells is a #1 Morse taper. I just cut the shank off leaving about an inch and then put it into one of the holes in the boring head and tightened the set screw. Here is a link to the item. http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/subc...rtical=TOOL&subcat=Lathes&gridindicator=false

I too believe Chris sells straight shank live centers, altough not sure about the shank sizes & not sure about the offsetting one that ridge runner mentioned, only because I have never asked, but atleast I know he use to sell the standard straight shank LC's, and that's what comes with the lathes he sells, as they fit a jacobs chuck on the tailstock. I think I also bought one from Him that was 1MT a long time ago for one of My other lathe's tailstock. I have also got them from sears Like Dick mentioned or ebay.

I took and turned the taper straight in the lathe so it would fit on the boring head. The one I had was not hardened so it was easy.

I think I did also. Can't remember as it's been a number of years.
