Manila, Philippines -- Reigning National Open Champion Lee Vann Corteza
beat 2005 World Pool titlist Wu Chia-ching of Taiwan, 15-10, in their
10-ball match to pocket $3,000 at the One Side billiard hall in Malate,
Manila, late Sunday.

"Yes, I beat Wu Chia-ching in 10-ball," said Corteza, the top player of
Negros Billiard Stable and one of seven Filipino cue masters who advanced
to the last 64 after the second day of the World Pool Championship at the
Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.

"Kasama yan [money game] sa training natin eh [that money game is part
of our training]," said the 28-year-old Corteza, who is guaranteed a $2,000
purse for advancing to the knockout stage.

After an opening 7-9 setback to Serbia's Goran Mladenovic, 7-9, Corteza
bounced back by demolishing Taiwanese Pei Wei Chang, 9-4, and American
Jeremy Jones, 9-4, last Sunday.

Unlike Corteza, Asian Games silver medalist Jeffrey "Bata" de Luna ended up
on the short end of his duel with reigning US Open 9-ball champion Shane
Van Boening, 21-13, and blew away $1,000 at the Bugsy billiard hall in
Quezon City.

The Philippines has the advantage over Taiwan in the early stages of the WPC. Only 1 player so far has been eliminated (Antonio Lining) for the Filipinos and 11 out of the 12 Filipinos that have played so far are going to the next round. On the other hand, 3 TPE players are now gone.

Also, out of the 5 PHI vs TPE head to head matches, the current score is 4 to 1 in favor of the Philippines.

I think the key is the soft-breaking. I notice only taiwanese players and Japanese player Naoyuki Oi never used the soft breaks.

Have you seen Jeff De Luna break?
 
I'm not into these "Taiwan vs. Philippines" thingy but for what's it worth,
here's some matches to look forward to. Ramil "Bebeng Bacolod" Gallego will
be up against Kuo Po-Cheng while Leonardo "Rattlesnake" Andam will play Wu
Yu-Lun. There will be 2 All-Filipino match-ups with Jeff De Luna playing Lee
Vann Corteza and Dennis Orcullo vs. Joven Bustamante. There will be no All-
Taiwanese affair in the round of 64...
