Taking a break from pool

Yep, I think a week off or so is on the cards. I was planning on just one night's play this week, that being the usual 9 ball tourney, after having a really good few hours fun on Saturday afternoon. Now, however the choice is not all mine.

The problem is, I twisted my ankle last Thursday while playing with my dogs (they're always at fault for this!) but gritted my teeth & played pool anyway. So because I'm trying to protect my ankle while walking I end up straining a tendon in my foot! Nothing new there, I suffer badly with tendonitis but it does get old quickly when you're in pain. I have this Aircast boot thingy from a couple of years ago that I put on at the first sign of foot trouble & it can sometimes save me from further pain.

Not this time. Sunday afternoon I'm hobbling around when I lose my balance. As I go to catch myself I managed to wrench my back. Damn, did it hurt! It got worse as the night went on, leading to a sleepless night. I couldn't even lay down without spitting out all kinds of obscenities! I saw my doctor this morning & he tells me strained tendon in the foot & a strained muscle in my back, it feels like it's under the shoulder blade.

So I'm supposed to stay off my feet as much as possible (Ha! Try doing that when you've got dinner to cook, kids to pick up, etc!) & go in for some electrotherapy on Wednesday. I can't wait.

So even if I wanted to play pool this week (which I do, can't help myself!) it's looking very unlikely, unless I dose myself up well beforehand with the Skelaxin & Hydrocodone he gave me.

Sorry this turned out to be so long but typing it has stopped me from just grabbing my head & screaming!!!!!! So bloody frustrating.:(

Well I had the electrotherapy treatment today, with more to come on Friday. What a great feeling that is! Like a really good massage.

My foot is feeling a lot better but the back is still tight. Part of me is wanting to say to hell with it & play the 9 ball tourney tomorrow so I found myself in the kitchen tonight getting into my stance to see how it felt! It's not looking good, my left (bridge) shoulder is still stiff along with the back. I'd love to play but if I can't do myself justice it'll be a quick 2 & out.

I'll see what the morning brings before I say yay or nay but I know I'll have to find something good to do if I don't play. I'll just be grumbling around the house otherwise!:o

I feel you on this. I injured my back back in college in the late 90's and as a result, lived with the pain of a herniated disk for a few years before deciding on surgery in 04. It was around that time that I took a liking to pool and also "adapted' to playing quickly (mainly because I wouldn't be able to bend down for longer than a few seconds). That's why I'm a relatively quick player today. I wish you the best in your recovery and if the time off from pool will help you heal quicker, definitely do it!

Sucks that you got hurt man. Maybe a few days off will help your game even? I'd gotten into a bit of a pool rut and then one day at work I slipped and fell on wet oily concrete landing right on my shooting elbow. It was cold that day so I had on a sweat shirt and a jacket and the skin was not broken. As I laid there on the concrete in pain the first though was "OMG my arm is broken or might be seriously messed up and I won't be able to play anymore!" Well it turns out I just had a severe bone bruise and I was able to go back to work and play within a few days but it was painful. I worked thru it though and now because of a forced break from playing almost every day my hunger and desire came back and my game has jumped a level:)

Wow, I am just cringing at reading all of this. I'm sure you have gotten out the old pool books, because you can't help yourself. LOL I sure hope you get through this quickly. I would have to say though, if you are going to heal up, do that. I think by playing and straining your back and putting the pressure on your foot for a tournament is likely to make this take longer to heal than if you just take the time now. Of course, I wish I would have posted this before the day after. LOL

BTW, How big are your puppies? I can't wait to hear the answer to this one. (imagining 2 tiny chihuahuas) :D
