Taking a break.

I was in a slump for a couple of months, playing/practicing every day to try to work through it. A couple weeks ago I took 4 days off & went fishing. I have played much better since I got back. Give me your thoughts on taking breaks from playing.

A break is always good. As for how effective it is, I think it depends on how ingrained the bad habit has become. If it hasn't been too deeply ingrained, then a break can allow a brain reset --- when you get back to the table, the old subconscious habits kick-in and the later bad ones are forgotten. That would be my first choice when in a slump. If that doesn't work, then the next choice would be to have someone who knows my game watch me play and see if they can pick up on anything.

I'm not an instructor. My thoughts... there are two ways to get out of a slump. Push through it or take a break. If you've been playing too much and hit a slump, take a break. If you play once a week and are in a slump, play more. The real trick is figuring out which is which and taking the correct action.

There's something about a break that can push you past the slump and sometimes even past the current plateau that you're on. When you get back into playing it's easy to feel if something is wrong. If you've just been grooving bad habits they won't feel bad if you're trying to just brute force through them.

A couple of times in my life I've taken a break from the game and come back a level better than I used to be (after a few sessions to get my arm loose). It's a really strange thing. I have pet theories about what's happening when it happens, but nothing worth more than speculation.

It's happened to me too... feels to me like a break allows the voices "do this, not that, etc." to die down and release the inner player I've been constructing.

Until the next time...
