Do you guys ever take a week off every few months? I started playing seriously again about 4 months ago, but in that 4 months ive played almost every day. Someone suggested that every three or four months it can be good to take a week off to recharge. What do you guys think of this? Im asking because today i went and played and i was just not feeling it. I forced myself through an hour and a half lol

Honestly, yes, I do the same thing.

However, I do think you should examine what your goals are for your pool career. Is it strictly a leisurely played hobby? Do you aspire to be the best in town? The county? The state? A bonafide shortstop? A full-blown pro?

If it's any of those last couple I mentioned, you might want to see if you can talk to players who've made it that far and see if you're willing to make the same kind of sacrifices that they did.

My love for the game hates it when I take a break. But, that love always feels so refreshed and renewed when I get back to the table.

I'm not quite sure what my goals are exactly. I wasn't expecting to become as obsessed as I have lol. I'm very competitive and I hate to do things poorly. Right now I just want to run my first 2 pack! Lol I think I'm gonna focus on golf and chess for a week or so and come back.

Take a break if you really want to but why take a break just because you weren't feeling it that particular evening? Like others said, it depends on what you want or expect in regards to pool. For some people, if they just weren't into it in a session they would be thinking about getting back to the practice table the next evening. Deep down you probably know exactly what you expect from yourself regarding pool but, wisely, don't want to mention it. I think deep down we all know what we want ideally. Personally, I don't think a "scheduled break" would work that well but if you just don't feel like playing then that sounds like the best time to shut it down.

If you play when you are not feeling it or are frustrated be careful that you don't develop or reinforce any bad habits.

I take time off all the time. Here's my opinion, when there’s less time to play/practice, you waste less time. When you have a compressed play schedule, you tend to focus on what’s important, succinct, and meaningful.

Constraining time encourages quality time, IMO. But I'm just a banger. Maybe I shouldn't take so much time off?

I'm sure a shortstop or pro's opinion is much different, so it also goes back to what others said about your "goals" are as a player...and therefore, what suits you personally.

Much success in your quest,

Its like any other sport. You have a physical portion, endurance portion, and central nervous system activation portion. With you playing almost every day, unless you are playing for less than an hour a day you aren't getting much rest time in as far as central nervous system goes. I have a table in the house and I take a 4-5 day break on and off.

I knew a guy once, his name was Charlie "The Germ" Wasserman. He got that name on account of his aversion to germs. I think they call it a phoab..., a phoob..., an aversion to germs. Anyway, Charlie was always in the pool hall. Rain, or shine, it didn't matter.
One day we was all getting ready to get a ring game going when somebody asked, "Where's Charlie?" We all looked around, but Charlie was no where to be found.
Twenty-five years to the day, Charlie walks into the pool hall and comes over to the table where only a couple of the old gang is left.
"Where the hell have you been?" One of them asks.
Charlie yawns and says, "I overslept."

Absolutely, take some time off when you're not feeling it. Playing every day will definitely give you this feeling every now and then. It doesn't have to be a week, maybe a couple days, but play when you're feeling it and stop when you don't. Just coming back to the game again, you're redeveloping the neuron/muscle connections, hopefully in the right directions. Have fun!

Thanks for the advice. I think I'm just gonna wait till I really have the urge to play. I'm thinking this will be in a few days. Maybe I'll finish a few papers and focusing on my chess game will improve my one pocket lol
