So, I am on a bucket list trip to the Worlds with a billiard buddy. We arrived Sunday, our luggage arrived Monday, having apparently decided to stay over in NY. Our hotel is a 5 minute walk from the venue. I walked over last night as they were setting up. I didn't go in, but I could see a lot through the window. The Kozoom vendor booth was smaller than I thought it would be. But the exciting thing was that I could see the demonstration table they set up, and Pedro and Hugo, the American contingent, were shooting, along with someone I didn't recognize.

Outside, smoking, was Mr. Barki, the President of the UMB, chatting with Kurt Ceulemans, and someone else I recognized but didn't know his name. After a while they both went inside and Mr. Barki was by himself, so I went up to him and introduced myself.

Then, walking back to the hotel, I saw 3 guys walking towards me when I realized that the guy on the left was Dick Jaspers. What I should have done was wish him good luck, but I froze up and just nodded to them.

Then this morning I met a couple of players in the hotel restaurant - apparently some of the players are staying here. I'll be going over for the first matches shortly. The first matches begin in about 2 hours.

I hope to update this regularly as the event progresses.

Special note to dogloose: feel free to excerpt any or all of this for your site if you think it would be of any interest to the folks who read your site.

YOU ARE ONE LUCKY GUY.....
ENJOY YOURSELF....:)
i look forward to the updates

It is about a half your before the first match starts. They just introduced the players, and as they were introduced the went to a reserved seating area that happened to be a couple of rows in front of me. Caudron was introduced next to last, and got the last seat in that section. When the final player, Blomdahl, was introduced, Caudron tried to get him to sit on the step of the aisle between the rows, and they both seemed get a good chuckle.

The first game started and I am focusing on the Burgman/Kim match. Seated a couple of rows behind me are Jaspers and Merkx.

In the early going most of the players are having trouble with the very long table conditions. Only Barbeillon and Yelled are averaging significantly more than 1.0. Unfortunately they are playing each other. *I imagine the scoring will improve as the tables get shorter.

J.G. Kim, in the match I am focusing on, just ran 10, the first double digit run of the event. Scoring has picked up. *Only 1 player is below 1.0 the moment. *Kim leads at the break, 21-11, mainly on the strength of his run of 10.)* Kim ended up winning 40-35.

Had some technical difficulties but I am back, focusing on the Sayginer/Umeda match.

Sameh looks very sharp, up 23-8 at the break, in 6 innings (HR is 9).

It is over.* Sameh went out 40-9, in 10 innings, meaning Umeda needed to break the long run record by 3 to equalize.* Not surprisingly he was unable to do it.* Sameh's 40 in 10 innings is the best game of the event so far.

As an aside, when I went out to the lobby area between matches, I saw Blomdahl shooting Rotation on the demo pool table.* He's a hell of a pool player.* Every time he got out of position he left his opponent dead safe.* No shot and only crazy kicking paths.* Very cool to see him playing pool.* Of course he had no opponent, he was shooting by himself - so when that happened he just moved the cue ball and continued.

Now in the last slot of the day I am focusing on the Piedrabuena/Boingberes match. Pedro was very sharp at the start and jumped out to an early lead, but then he stalled out a bit and by the break he was down 18-20.

Pedro is mounting a comeback on the strength of a run of 7, and at the end of the 16th inning, leads 29-21.

Now Pedro is in a bit of another dry spell and the lead is down to 29-27 in 22 innings. And now he trails 29-30. Sadly, he ended up losing - in his defense he was dealing with a home town crowd, as his opponent was French. They were very respectful, but the hometown vibe was too much for him. So both he and Hugo lost today and will play tomorrow. Hugo will play Zanetti, and Pedro will play H.K. Kim.

In the first set of games, tomorrow, the top 4 ranked players in the world will be playing: Blomdahl, Caudron, Jaspers, and Merckx.

Amazing.

PS: sorry about the asterisks, I'm writing these in a notepad app and then cutting and pasting them here and for some reason those asterisks popped. I deleted some of them, and then decided to let the rest be, as there were a lot to delete, and they didn't really effect readability that much, IMO.

The man playing bury, I forget the name,

Made some very nice shots, has a style thats unfamiliar to me and fun to see

Wow, thanks for the play by plays. Looking forward to more. Sounds like you two are having a ball (I know, or three). :)

Tales, continued

I got to the venue a little early and as I write, Marco Zanetti is hitting shots on the demo table. And now Blomdahl is joining him.

On a sad note, I, like many of you, got the information about Bob Byrne's declining condition. I know his European Billiard friends would want to know about it so I made an opportunity to let Kurt Ceulemanns know about the situation. He was glad to know what was going on, and talked about his dad meeting Bob years ago and how Bob and Sang Lee led a little renaissance in billiards in the US. His European billiard friends will be having him in their thoughts. If you are reading this 12squared, if you talk with his wife maybe you can convey to her their awareness of his situation, and their good wishes for him.

Now Rich and I are inside waiting for the warm-ups to begin. We are situated in the front row right by the Caudron table, with Blomdahl on the right and Jaspers on the left, while the Merckx match is 2 tables down, but will be shown on the big screen so we will be able to see all 4 matches.

A dream start for Tellez against Caudron. He won the lag and ran 3. Caudron got a kiss, and Tellez ran 6 more. Caudron got another kiss and Tellez then ran another 5 to jump out to a 14-0 lead.

Caudron missed a kick shot and Tellez ran another 3. 17-0 in the middle of the 4th inning. Another miss from Caudron. First blank inning for Tellez. At the break he leads 20-2. Meanwhile, on the adjacent table, Jaspers just ran 13.

Back from break, they each miss their next shot but then Caudron had a nice little run of 5. Now in 11th inning, Tellez hasn't made a point since the break and Caudron has chipped away to get to 20-10. Caudron just made a massive draw back around the table. I think he is feeling it now - 20-13 after 12. And now it is tied, 22-22 after 18.

On the other adjacent table Blomdahl just ran 12. Meanwhile in inning 21, Caudron finally took the lead, 26-22 in the 21st. It is now a bit of a slog with tough positions as Tellez ties it at 27 in the 25th, and Caudron runs 2 to retake the lead.

Meanwhile, Jaspers has closed out Gholam 40-19, in 18.Merck and Blomdahl have both reached 40 and their opponents need 18 and 23 in their equalizing inning. Neither did it.

Still nip and tuck in this match, though. Tellez retakes the lead 31-30 in the middle of the 30th. And Caudron retakes the lead after 31, 36-32. And Caudron wins it 40-34 in 33. Amazing.

In the second session I will be focusing on the Sanchez/Rudolph match, with the Zanetti/Patino match on an adjacent table.

While I am waiting, let me mention something curious. Between matches they were cleaning the tables with a spacey-looking handheld cordless vacuum of some sort. Almost like a zamboni for billiards. Turns out that it isn't even a Billiard-specific device. It is made by Dyson and I should be able to find it online. Probably way too expensive to consider getting, but we'll see, as anything that promotes better and more frequent table cleaning is a GOOD THING.

I also got some info on the new rail cloth that Simonis has come out with. The Kozoom guy told me that it synthetic and similar to Royal Pro cloth. He said it made the table play longer for a longer time, and that the French Billiard clubs that have user it like it a lot. FWIW.

Dani is warming up and we should be getting started within 10 minutes.

Not much going early in this match. Dani is leading 13-5, but in 11 innings. Polychronopoulous started his match by running 10 from the break. Kokkoris, a first round loser, is leading Sameh Sing on 22-8 after 9.

Dani has come alive and had a nice run of 9 to lead at the break, 22-7.

Well into the matches, the seeded players are dominating as expected, except in the Sidhom match, where he is still trailing, but starting to make a little comeback. Hugo is being dominated by Zanetti, 23-13 in 16. Sidhom has cut his deficit to 25-14 in the 18th.

Polychronopoulous just hit 40, leaving Behzat needing 27 to equalize. He didn't.

From 29-11 in the 16th, Dani just ran 11 and out with the yellow ball.

Meanwhile, Hugo has rallied a bit and cut his deficit to 2, 24-22 against Zanetti. And now he has tied it 24-24 in the middle of the 20th. The Empire strikes back, as Zanetti runs 5 to retake the lead. Hugo hung in there but lost 40-32 in 25. He hung tough all the way and gave one of the best players for the last 25 years all he could handle. I know he is disappointed, but he should be proud of his performance.

Sidhom is doing his best to emulate Caudron's comeback, and just ran 13 to take the lead, 32-30. Now Sidhom leads 39-35, with the yellow. And he wins it, completing the second great comeback of the day. Wow.

I'm going to take a break and sit out the 3rd session, but I'll be back for the fourth session, where Pedro will be playing for his tournament life against H.J Kim, the seeded player in his group.

Sorry for the delay, here is an update for the last session on Wed.

Watching the Pedro/Kim match.* It started on the slow side with Pedro leading after 6, 6-4, but then Kim ran 5 to move out front.* After Pedro made 1, Kim followed that up with a run of 10 giving him a lead of 19-7 midway through inning 8.* Pedro missed on a double the rail that was very very close (I thought he made it at first).* Then Kim made 3 to go into the break up 22-7.* Pedro has a tough row to hoe to survive.

Coming out of the break, Pedro missed and Kim stepped up and ran 6 to go up 28-7.* Things look a little bleak for Pedro.

They aren't picking up any. Pedro is getting ones and twos with some blanks, while Kim is rarely blanking and is making 2 or more almost every inning.* At 36-12 midway through 14, we are entering "it will take a miracle territory.* Pedro seems to be in that fickle billiards place where your close ones miss and your opponent's close ones all seem to make.* Kim went out at 40-14, so Pedro needs 26 to equalize.* Not surprisingly he couldn't do it, so both Americans are out.

This is a long one. It was an amazing day. Seeder players got eliminated, players had to equalize for their tournament life. I never imagined how exciting it would be to be there in person and watch the matches in the context of the whole event rather tha a relatively sterile video of a match, wrenched out of context.

Afterwards I told my buddy Rich that after that day, nfl football is boring. Hyperbole for sur, but not by as much as I would have thought before this experience. Anyway, here it is:

--------------------------------------
Well it is a big session, the top 4 players meet the players who won in the first session.* We have the Caudron/Barbeillon match on the left, Blomdahl/Rodriguez in front of us, Jaspers/Kahofer to the right, and Marckx/JG Kim further down on the right.* The match's start is delayed due to technical internet problems.* Mr. 100, Raymond Ceulmanns is here for the first time.* They play various things on the big screen before matches, and it was cool seeing Mr. Ceulmanns watching the Billiard clip from Donald in Mathemagicland.

Still waiting - 22 minutes late, but they are allowing the players to warm up, anticipating the problem will be solved in the next 10 minutes.*

We are at the break.* Caudron trails 23-14, Not sure of other matches because they haven't fixed the problem and so, there is no big scoreboard showing all 4 matches.* OK, Jaspers leading Kahofer, 23-9.* Kim leading Merckx, 23-20.* And Rodriguez leading Blomdahl, 20-17.* The top seeds better get their act together.* Kozoom seem to have gotten their act together, as we now have the big scoreboard with all matches up to date.

Merck has woken up and had a nice run of 11.* Kahofer is on a nice run, chasing Jaspers And tying it up at 24 in 16 innings.* Caudron kept chipping away and has caught his French opponent at 28 in the 19th.* Jasper's struck back and has a 3 pt. lead.* And now 7.* Barbeillon is on a run which turned out to be 6 to take a 35-28 lead.* Caudron and Blomdahl both trail, but they both have the yellow ball so if their opponent goes out they get the equalizing chance.

Merckx is first to hit 40 and Kim needs 12 to equalize.* Tough ask.* Couldn't do it.* 40-32 in 20.

If Barbeillon hits 40 this place will explode.* And it just happened.* Caudron needs 12 to equalize.* Nope.* 40-31 in 25, and Caudron is out.* First major upset.* And the crowd goes crazy!!!

Jaspers closed out Kahofer, 40-26 in 20.* Once Kahofer tied Jaspers, Dick threw a blanket ever him, outscoring him 16-2 over the last 4 innings.

Now we are down to the Blomdahl match, with TB trailing 36-29 but on a little run, that brings it to 36-36 at the end of the 26th.* And remember, he has the yellow.* Rodriguez misses by a hair, and TB gets back to work.* I won't be surprised if he runs out.* And he does.

In the next session we have:
Zanetti v HK Kim on table 1
Polychronopoulous v Palazon on table 2
Sidhom v Ma on table 3
Sanchez v Soumagne on table 4

As an aside I just ran into Americans for the first time here, a couple from SF.

Dani will be facing the hometown crowd that will be pulling for his French opponent.* He needs to get out quick.

Zanetti and Sidhom off to fast starts running 6 and 7, respectively off the break.* Soumange ran 3 off the break but Dani responded with 13, tying Jaspers for high run, I think - maybe he was listening to me.

Ma responded to Sidhom's 7 with a starting run of 4.* And now Ma takes the lead with a nice run of 7.

The early level of play this session is much higher than the first.* We have had a 13, 7, 7, and a 6 in the first 3 innings.* We will see if that holds up.

Dani's average was 7.5 after his first 2 innings so you would figure it will go down in the next inning.* Nope, he has 10, giving him 25 in 3 innings.* If he keeps it up, we could enter possible record territory.* Not a bad start:* 13, 2, 10.

After a bit of a slow start Poly has taken control of his match 20-8 in 12.*

You have to give Soumagne credit.* He gets blitzed and comes out of the break trailing 25-7 and runs 3.* His first 4 innings have been 3,2,2,3 and he is getting killed.

Ma has the lead over Sidhom at the break, 22-15.* Samih will need a comeback, but it is not as extreme as yesterday.

Zanetti is at the break, leading Kim, 22-9.

There will be no records in the Sanchez match, as they both have come out of the break a little cold.* Dani leads 30-10 after 8.* Unless I am mistaken I think he has had 3 double digit runs so far.* And he ended his first game 11 and out, so when he started with a 13, that made it 24 tournament points in a row without a miss.

Interesting little by play in this match.* Soumagne had a close one that the ref called a miss, but Sanchez insisted it made and in the end they counted it.* I'm not sure I like the idea of the players over-ruling the ref but either way it was a high level of sportsmanship on Dani's part.

Zanetti has come out of the break on fire with a run of 12.* 35-18 in the 12th.

Ma is now crushing Sidhom 36-16 after 14. Now Samih will need another big comeback after all.* I'm pulling for him.

Zanetti went out and now Kim needs to tie the tournament run record of 28 to equalize.* Nope.

And now I wonder if Dani's act of sportsmanship might cost him, as the Frenchman has closed to 35-29 after a run of 7.* Then Dani missed and someone in the crowd said something that drew his attention.* Another exchange of blanks and Dani is looking frustrated.

Ma 1 point away, but Sidhom gets another chance.

Poly closes out Palazon 40-28 in 22.

Ma is a little stuck on 39, but Sidhom not taking advantage.* And Ma finally closes him out 40-23 in 21.

Dani leads 38-31, after 18 but is visibly frustrated.* Soumagne makes 1 and then Dani gets kissed out (kissedout, where have I heard that before?)* 3 more for Soumagne, but Dani has the yellow ball so it can be over any minute, but Dani misses a jacked up shot long.* Damn this is exciting!** Tied at 38 and still shooting.* 39.* One more and Dani has to try to equalize.* And it is so.* Soumagne goes out 40-38 and Dani needs 2 to draw!* Fricking unbelievable.* Made the break, left a cookie, made it, and it is a draw.* I think Dani will go into the KO stage on average.

Yup, just verified it, Dani's average is much higher.* What a glorious performance for the Frenchman, and what a cruel disappointment, as well, not to move on.* The thrill of (a near, and certainly a moral) victory and the agony of defeat, all in the same match. He was a late addition to replace a qualifier who had to scratch.

I'm going to focus on Sayginer v DKK this round on table 1.* The guy with the best game so far against the heartbreakingly close to winning finalist from last year.* Cho v Novak is the adjacent table.* The noise will be down at the other end on table 4 where Eddy Leppens will be playing Jeremy Bury, the Frenchman who is coming off his first 2 big tournament wins at the Carom Cafe event and a World Cup.* After the performances of the other 2 Frenchmen, he has a lot to live up to.

Next session, more hot starts.* Breaking players made 3, 5,* 6, and 9.* Sameh had the 6, and Bury had the 9.

These are closer matches.* Bury leads Leppens at the break 20-10, but the other matches are a couple of points apart, approaching the break.* Morales just got 20 and leads Tran 20-16, and now Sameh leads at his break, 20-17.* Novak runs 8 to get to the break, and leads Cho 25-18 in 16.

Bury came back from the break cold and Leppens is chipping away.* He now trails 22-19 after 9.*

Sameh just made a spectacular point I can't really explain.* He and Kang are tied at 23.* Leppens has pulled within 1 of Bury.* Cho and Tran are both working on narrowing their respective deficits, each on a run of 3 and still going.* Cho has tied it up at 29 in the middle of the 21st.* And Leppens has taken the lead over Bury.* And Bury fights back with 2 and retakes at 28-27.* And Leppens fights back with 2 to retake.* Nip and tuck.* And again, Bury makes 2 and retakes.* And now tied at 31.

Holy Cow

Tran has chipped away and is now only down 2

Sameh hit 40 and even if Kang runs 13 to equalize, Sameh will advance on average.* But he doesn't.* No one will be excited to play him in the KO stage.* Cho has also won.* Moorales beat Tran.

Back to Bury and Leppens.* Bury has had a nice stretch and leads 38-31 with the white ball.* I don't know which had the better first game, in case of a draw.* Bury got kissed into 39 and then missed.* Bury went out and Leppens needs 7 to equalize.* It may not matter if Bury had the better first game.

Holy cow!!!* Leppens equalized and someone told me that he qualifies, but I will have to verify that.

Yup, Leppens is in and Bury is out. Reminiscent of last year's final where Blomdahl equalized with 7 After Kang went out 40-33. Difference being that was a KO stage game so there was a shoot-out,

I skipped the last session because I've gotten a little sick and I was just too tired.

Flotsam and Jetsam

As I have mentioned, they have a pool table And a billiard table set up in the area outside the arena area. They are having a little contest on the pool table where there is a paper target and you shoot 4 balls to accumulate points. It costs 2 euro to try, so after that great session I decided to give it a whirl and did lousy.

But I was the first one to try after the session let out so there were about 20 people gathered around. One of them was Marco Zanetti. He wanted to try it but he didn't have any money on him. So I gave him a 2 euro piece and he said he would give the prize if he won anything. He did much better than I (as did my Billiard buddy, Rich, subsequently) as we would expect. We will see if he/I won anything an Saturday night. But, hey, I've never been a backer for a pro before.

Today was also the first day that Raymond Ceulmanns was there.

Tomorrow the knock-stage starts with the round of 16. There will be 2 sessions of 4 tables. The round of 8 follows with 2 sessions of 2 tables. I can't wait.

More later.

Yes, that is basically it, although the one here has a different attachment that is wider and swivels and rotates. I still need to find about that.

I'm pretty sure that the one beneaththesur mentioned runs about 70 euro. But it runs on 220 and I would want cordless.

As an aside, I have long wanted to get an old school set of balls, and while they didn't have any on Tuesday, they (kozoom) bring more stuff from their warehouse every day, so now I have them. Two solid white balls, one of which has small black circles, and a deep maroon, almost plum colored, "red" ball.

On a sad note, I, like many of you, got the information about Bob Byrne's declining condition. Rich, I just now read your post from a couple days ago. I left a message for Cindy immediately and sent your entire quote to her to share w/Bob. Once I hear back I will let you know. This was very nice of you to do and report.

Thanx for the reports, Kissedout.....I usually cheer for Jaspers.

...and I wish you enough luck at billiards that you have to change your screen name.

Funny thing is, my mere presence correlates with these guys getting more kisses than I recall seeing on all the videos I've watched. I blame it on me.

Jaspers took a tough defeat against Leppens, who is now in the final 4, and whose win was fueled by a run of 18, that turned a deficit of 8 into a lead of 10. That is what it takes to beat such an iconic player.

This will be the last of the detailed reports as I want to really focus on the quarter finals without making notes:

So this morning at breakfast, sitting less than 10 feet away, Blomdahl and Jaspers were sitting together talking about their match, and some of the positions they faced.* Blomdahl said that he just couldn't get a position and thought he might have to call Air France to advance his flight but then he got some good positions and pulled it out.* It was like overhearing Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio talking about hitting techniques.* If I sound starstruck it is only because I am.

My developing cold necessitated venturing out, on the tram, to find a pharmacy.* But I couldn't get the ticket machine to take my money.* A voice behind me said, "I know how it works", and it was Pedro.* He said last year they had trouble with too, and he helped me get my ticket.*

We will be focusing an 2 matches, one a match-up of 2 World Champions, Blomdahl and Zanetti.* The other features 2 of the 3 remaining Turks, Sayginer and Coklu.

What a start, opening runs were 5, 6, 7, and 8, with Barbeillon leading the way with the 8, and then backs it up with a 10, to take an 18-0 lead over Catano.

Zanetti with a nice run of 10 to take the lead 14-9 at the end of the third.* Barbeillon runs a 5 to go into the break up 23-1 in the middle of the third.*

Tasdemir and Kim are very close, 10-10 in bottom of the 6 with Kim still shooting.* His run ends at 6.* Tasdemir responds with a run of 10, to take a 20-13 lead at the break, in the middle of the 8th.* Now Kim is coming back and leads 34-24.* Tayfun hanging in and just made a gorgeous draw shot but Kim leads by 11 with 36 and the yellow ball.* Tayfun can't get anything going and Kim is nibbling him to death.* And closes him out with a lovely double the rail shot.

Sameh on fire with a 10, and still shooting.* His run ends at 11 giving him a 23-2 lead at the break in the middle of the 8th.* Now he is gets to 40 with the white - Coklu needs 19 to equalize.** Couldn't do it and Sameh moves on

Coming out of the break, Catano is putting together a nice little run to try to work his way back into the match.* Barbeillon has slowed down a little making 1s and 2s, But time is on his side.* Now a run of 5 puts him on the brink with 39 but then he misses.* Barbeillon gets to 48, and Catano needs 26 to equalize and force a shoot-out.

Blomdahl comes back with a 6 to retake 15-14.* Zanetti leads at the break 21-15 at the end of 5.* Coming out oh their break, Blomdahl gets kissed out andZanetti takes advantage, running 7 to jump out to a 28-15 lead after 6.* Blomdahl is ice cold since the break.* Zanetti closes it out 40-21 in 11 with the yellow ball.

These matches lacked the drama of yesterday's, but what a good level of play.* Every match had a double digit run, and Zanetti's 11 inning game was second best of the event.* So far.

-------------------------------------

Slow start except for Ma who starts with a 6. Jaspers missed the break shot - no nerves here.* Merck and Cho are being very tactical, leaving each other very tough shots.* Merck breaks through for a little run of 4. 5 innings in and Ma is the only one averaging better than 2.

Sanchez is on a run now - made 8 and leads 15-3. And now Merck makes a run of 7 to lead 15-4 in the middle of the 9th.* He leads 22-5 at the break.

And Poly got a run of 9 to now lead 18-13.* And Ma caught him at 18.* But Poly leads at the break 20-18. It has turned into a dogfight now, back and forth but Ma getting the best of it, but in the end the Greek is to much for him.

After falling behind Merckx, Cho closes to 17-16.* And takes the lead at the break, 21-18 at the end of 17. And he wins 40-33, which is a lot closer than it looks.

Leppens making a move to get back in to his match with Jaspers and does more than that - he takes the lead with a run of 18, high run of the event so far -. he leads at the break 26-16 at the end of 9. Down 38-32, Jaspers commits a time foul, which gives Leppens the break shot needing only 2. He steps up and makes them and he through to the semis and Jaspers is out.

Back from their break, Sanchez continues to dominate Morales.* He runs 8 and leads 33-6 at the end of the 14th.* Dani gets to 40 in 16, and Morales needs 34 to equalize.* After making 3 he misses and Dani is through to the next round
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Briefly, in the qf, Kim beat Zanetti, Sayginer beat Barbeillon, Sancez beat Cho, and Leppens beat Polychronopoulous. The semis will be Sanchez v Leppens and Sayginer v Kim.

I've missed so much of the event, probably like most, how many have a week off to view all the matches?

I'm even going to miss the 2nd semi final and FINAL match, will do my best to not look at anything and just make my way to the video archive and watchthose games hopefully without having it spoiled for me. Tough task :)

Take it all in you lucky dog!

I was just told that Dani Sanchez is in the finals with a win 40-39 over Leppens in 24 inns.
