Tallahassee Florida...

Last I knew Joe Steymeyer went to Mississippi. He got into poker big time and ditched pool was what I heard. He used to hang out with a guy named Tommy Avant in Tallahassee who did commit suicide many years ago. There was a fellow by the name of John Sangster who may have worn glasses for a while back then who played with both of the above players. He lives over in the Mobile area and comes to the spring and fall tournaments at Starcade Billiards in Fort Walton. He did carpentry for work if I remember correctly. A.D. Tate died several years ago. I believe a heart attack at home. He was a great backer and good judge of players ability. His traveling buddy Don is still playing poker regularly, backgammon and one pocket occassionally. Anybody remember Smiley? Yes he's still sellin' cues and talkin' pool stuff. He's got more pool wanna-be in him than any ten people. FYI.

I haven't seen Larry or John yet. I asked Mike, but he didn't know anything. Who told you about Joe?

Rick Howard told me last year in a late night conversation out in his shop

I learned that AD passed, but Tom has much more info than I do. Sorry the news didn't turn out any better.

Well, I guess Tom covered just about everything I was going to respond to. I moved from Tally about 2 years ago, but I am not far away and I visit often. As far as pool goes there (and I assume you mean action) there really isn't any. You can find a little cheap action every now and then but that's about it. There are a few good players, but some, like John, don't gamble (he can damn sure bank balls and is a helluva guy though!) and others I think have just taken up different interests. You can usually always find someone to practice with. There are a few places in town to play, but I would recommend Snookers for their tables. Now, if you want some fun with a little bit of pool on the side :) head over to Pockets. There is lots of fun to be had there and they have I think eight 9 footers and like twelve 8 footers. There is also Halligan's and Bannerman's, but I haven't had a reason to go to either for years.
I like to gamble but 1. you'll have to come to Valdosta to find me and
2. you'll probably kick my ass!!

Anyway, if ya go, have fun in Tally!

Thanks for the information
I knew Tommy as well. I feel for his family.

John Sangster is the guy I was thinking about. Good guy and an underrated shooter as well.

Hate to hear about A.D. Tate. He was a true gentlemen and was an excellent backer.

Thanks again and hopefully it will turn out that Joe S is still with us and that he departure was a mistake.

Sadly though...

Snookers is the best place to play in town. Halligans is a good poolroom as well. I haven't been to pockets lately, can't say. Bannerman's closed awhile back. If you come to town look me up at Hallies. We can play a couple of races.

Firehawk062,
If you come to Halligan's any Sunday night you might catch me there doing dropoffs and pickup of cue repairs. We can shoot some if you like. Big dog at large comes in a little later in the evenings. I'm there from about 7:30PM until 9:30PM. Ask any barmaid for Triple Cross Cues repair guy, Tom. Maybe I'll see you soon.

Hi Firehawk062,
Great to hear from you. If you go to my website(www.triplecrosscues.com), I would like to hear your comments. Good or bad. I need the feedback from people I know who will be honest with their opinion. You also have a lot of pool knowledge, and I respect that. Best of luck to you and don't stay away from Tallahassee long. Remember hustlin' those fellows at Pockets? The night we won big and you didn't miss a ball.
Tom

John Amiss is a good friend of mine. We play banks at his house or mine, and at Snooker's. He still plays one hell of a game.

Joe Stoutamire is in Biloxi area, and still plays.

A. D. Tate passed away a few years ago.
