Tallahassee US Open qualifier ROADTRIP RECAP

Mike and I drove 14 hours down to Tallahassee on friday. The drive was good and relaxing. The only real downside was probably the hotel we stayed at, the Collegiate Village Inn in Tallahassee. It was a bit run-down, and our AC didnt work in the first room. So, we asked for a second room, and the lights and phone didn't work there. Later on, the keycards stopped working. Kinda a bit more trouble than we expected from a sleepy hotel, but nothing a couple road hustlers couldn't handle.

The pool room was great (except for the $9/hour table fees), and we generally had a great time playing in the tourney (I decided last minute to put myself in the tournament). Mike didn't shoot his best, going 3-2, but still managed a 5th-place finish, I believe it was. I finished lower, going 1-2 in my matches (19-19 games). Mike didn't end up matching up with anyone afterwards, although someone he had a match against did offer to fight him outside for $500, for some reason. I matched up with a local everyone referred to as "Pork Chop", and won about $60. I wish I had gotten some pics and video, but I was not planning on being in the tournament myself.

Congrats to the two that won entries into the US Open!!! (Howie and another fellow whose name I cannot recall).

P.S. - we drove over 1750 miles in our trip, and then blew up a power steering pump only 45 minutes from getting home. I'm typing this from Rockville, Indiana, as my good friend slaps a new pump on. Now I'm praying to the god of head gaskets that the engine didn't overheat too badly and totally screw us! Wish us luck, we'll find out the engine's fate in a bit. The old Jeep's got over 178,000 miles now...

Let's see...

1,750 miles / 15mpg est x 3.50 gal = $408.33 fuel
2 night cheap room 40x2 = $80.00
Food from $1 menu 9 day x2 $54.00
entry fee x 1 = $100 (1 paid)
Grand total = $642.33

You'all could've just paid Mike's entry to the U.S.Open!! LOL

Of course then you wouldn't have the great memories of days on the road!! (priceless)

Actually, we raised almost all the gas/hotel money from donations from friends. We ended up averaging 22 mpg in a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 178K miles. Not bad for the old girl!

Glad you had fun up there. I wanted to be there, since a couple of my friends made the drive to play, but the time and the cash weren't on my side.

Thank you for the update! I had wondered how the trip went. Although it seems a few hiccups, it sounds like a memorable trip. :) That is awesome to hear.

Tell him I said congrat's on the 5th place finish - no small feat!

Hope things go better - get home safe!
