Taper on your Break cue

I am just curious as to what kinda taper people use on thier Break cue?

Or do you just keep it as is when you get it? or do you change it to what your playing cue is?

just looking for some options.

Ive been breaking with my z shaft and love it. IMO a break cue should have as low deflection as possible. Low deflection Gives you a larger margin for error....even when i hit the cueball slightly off my mark....the lack of deflection still makes me hit the one very solid.

the stiffer the better. the whole point is to drive the cb and not absorb the energy.

I know everyone is all about having a stiff shaft lol ( No pun intended )

But I use a Action SP, which has a very stiff shaft with a fairly low deflection rating. And I was thinking about just bringing the taper back a inch or two.

A couple months ago, i had a Joss that i was using for breaking and it was unbelievable. Maybe it was just because its a 13.25mm shaft but damn i could crush a 9ball and 8ball rack.

Two weeks ago while i was warming up before leagues, i grabbed my teammates Lucasi and was playing with that for a bit, and the taper on it was NICE!!!

So its not that i am looking for a Taper that is Super stiff,, one that just works.

I use on of Kevin Varney's break cues. It has a parabolic taper (correct me if I'm wrong, Kev), and is around 14.5 to 15 mm at the tip. It works better than any break cue I have ever owned. The secret for me is to hit the balls around 80%. I don't know what type of tip it has, but it gives good explosion with excellent control of the cue ball. Also, everyone who uses it thinks that it works great.

I think that the break is a confidence shot, and whatever cue YOU feel works best is what you should use.

I use a 13.5 mm phenolic tipped shaft with a pretty strong taper....it's parabolic for about 23" back from the tip...I use a med./hard stroke to break...focusing more on control than raw power...hard breaks have never got me anywhere...

I agree with the 80% thing, except my K.V. J/B cue is mor like 13mm or less. I wish I would've remebered 80% or less last night when we were playing the #1 team scotch doubles in the end of 8 ball season tourny. I broke, made the 8 on the break(they count as win) and flew whitey off the table.....opps! well that's as far as we made it, but I still was in the money, so that was nice.

i have two break shafts. one made by Mueller's for my Cuetec and the other made by Chad Carter in Owensboro, KY for my Jacoby & Nova.

both are very similar, 13.5mm, around 8-10" taper. when i have a tight rack i dont have any problems spreading the balls, or dropping one the usual percentage of the time. my problem is no luck, bad rolls, impossible spreads, bad karma, etc, etc.

Well today before leagues, hit up my break cue shaft with some 600grit sandpaper, a couple pieces of it, by hand, and then hit it up with a green scotch brite pad.

Then went to practice a bit with a friend, and first break i took playing 9ball, i squated whitey WOOT!!! i squated whitey every break except for one,, and it was kicked into a pocket.

Of course it got me to think that maybe my shaft was just dirty and i wasnt getting a good follow through lol,, I am a dork !!!!! So yea now i am going to be hitting up the shaft with the green scrubby before i practice or play leagues or any tournaments lol.
