Tapering veneers for full splice points

In this video from the main forum, the cuemaker tapers his veneers before installation:

I'm curious for the reason for this? Is it so they can be easily glued up independent of the butt? Or without tapering would the veneers not reach all the way past the points? (I've never made a full splice with veneers).

Tapering is necessary for the return points back towards the handle to be sharp.
