Can any of you cue makers let me know where you get your taps and dies from? Specifically 5/16-14 tap and 5/8-11 die...are what I am looking for.

Thank you.

Cues, usually use bastard thread sizes. Some have been in use enough that a few dealers have a supply of taps made and sell them fairly reasonably. The costs are much higher than standard taps but not nearly as expensive as having one made. Now dies are another subject. I don't know of anyone who sells bastard dies for the sizes that cuemakers generally use and to have one made expect to pay quite a premium for one. Both Atlas, Praether and probably others supply the more common taps used in cue-making.

taps are easy

As someone already said, Atlas has taps. The dies are tougher but you can get a tenon threader from www.cuesmith .com for $45 in the 5/8 x 11 size, it is basically a die with a long body to hold closer tolerance and concentricity while threading than a flat die can do. Hightower(cuesmith) may also have the taps. Good luck!

ps to my last post

The die is also available at Atlas, and a bit cheaper as well. It is also a compression die with an extended body to align better. I just happened to look at the Atlas site.

Hah!!! I had read the original post wrong. I thought I read 5/16 X 11. 5/8 X 11 is a standard die size. However, standard metal cutting dies usually do a poor job on wood anyway.

For the most part, I'll use the taps from Atlas when needed. Otherwise, I have a tap and die that I had made for me. If you're looking for a specific size that you want to use (to keep repairmen from easily making shafts for your cues) you can have someone make one for you custom.

Go to any Industrial Supply Tool distributor and they can order special taps and dies. (The Yellow Pages under Tools/Industrial.) Manufacturers such as Regal Beloit can do these reasonably quick and at a reasonable price. It's my fear that most companies that sell to the billiard industry will not have quality tools. I may be wrong. Regal Beloit is not the very best cutting tool manufacturer in the world but they are miles better than tools from India and Pakistan and China and like I said they ship rather quickly and won't break the bank. If you don't live where there's much industrial business then call MSC or Grainger and just tell them what you need. Be sure it's made of High Speed steel if you're cuting metals. Also there's different geometries in the tool that can be designed for better finish and tool life. So tell your suppiler what materials you'll be cutting - Brass - Stainless..... When comparing price if you see some that are so low compared to others have caution they may be junk or made of carbon steel which is made for only chasing damaged threads.
