i hate baseball, football, hockey, soccer, lacrosse, basketball, and any other team sport you could think of. true, i'm not athletic, i suck at sports! but there is something i find highly obnoxious about teams. let's all work in conjunction with each other, let's all syncronize ourselfs, let's all act like a team "team spirt" let's have names that will scare our opponents, (are their opponents 5 years old?) the bears, the tigers, the giants, wow, the giants, i'm scared! let's have a mascot that looks like a goofy animal. let's all eat hot dogs as a family, let's all wear clothing that looks the same, and has our team name on it. let's pat each other on our sweaty asses after we score. let's dance like assholes when we score. let's have announcers that shout and yell, and sound like idiots doing so. let's scratch our balls and chew a wad of tabaco. let's make millions and millions of dollars, and beat our wifes, and get busted for cocaine. oh i could go on and on and on, but on the other side of the coin, is individual sports, now this i like. bowling- yeah, it ain't the brightest sport out there, but it's one on one. golf, yes, it's boring, but still the pressure is there for one person to succed or fail. boxing, car racing, etc. etc. and of course the ultimate one on one sport pool. i love it, and what more can i say? do others feel this way, regarding individual vs team?

I do agree with most of what you said but that doesn't stop me from liking these sports. Also the fans and announcers pretty much act the same for team sports as they do for individual sports. boogity, boogity, boogity, I mean, come on!?
I will also say I was disgusted when Earl did his dance before making the nine. I think vejay singh is a moron for speaking out about Annika playing a PGA event. I think McMurry had no right to spin out Kenseth after the race.

So my point is all sports have problems and we as spectators have to choose which ones to put up with.

No, I don't feel that way at all and think you're full of what makes the grass grow green and tall. Watching any sport be it individual or team I find basically boring. However, concerning engaging in a sport, team sports are much more rewarding. They better reflect the human struggle for survival, basically in the bad old days loners died (individual sports), that is why banishment was such a significant punishment. Team sports reflect the human struggle for survival as a cohesive force. They also reflect unfortunately the more ignominious results of human interaction like war.
JMHO.

For the most part, I feel the same. I'm much more comfortable in individual sports. Unfortunately, I played hockey 'til I was almost 19 and in hindsight, I was wasting my time. Had my dad given me a golf club when I was 6 instead of a hockey stick, I have no doubt my life would have been different. And yeah, Bernie we can skip all that maucho crap EXCEPT for scratching our balls. Wow man, don't diss all the finer things in life... :)

Out of interest, do any of you guys play in a team-based league?

True you're still playing 1 on 1 games, but in any team sport much of your role will require you to do a job or fill a role as an individual. And team pool still requires you all collaborate for the 'common good'.

Personally I enjoy my team league, the cameradary (sp?) makes a nice change from the usual lonely battle :) , but I also feel more pressure in team games - you're not just playing for yourself, you don't want to let the other guys down.

That would be "comradery", but that's neither here nor there.

I agree with you about team pool. The onus is on you when it's your match so you still have the intense pressure of an individual sport, but you have the comradery (I can't think of a better word for it) of team sports. Actually I think the pressure is even more intense because you don't want to let your team down. It is kind of like baseball, which I consider a team sport played by individuals.
Similarly, I used to run alot, a whole lot. At one point I was running a roadrace every weekend and a couple of marathons a year, clearly an individual endeavor, but the most fun I had all year (every year) was a 8 man relay race from Plymouth, MA to Provincetown, MA. About 80 miles where we had to provide our own water stops, encourage each other, etc, it was always a great time. We wanted to go do a similar, but longer, race in Cape Briton, Canada; but we all got too old before we got there. (sigh!!!)
