technical help with VHS tapes volume

I recently bought a couple of VHS tapes from a forum member. The picture quality is great. they are not copies. they are of 1 pocket matches. i had to put that in here so i would not have to post it in NPR. My problem is that the vomume is was to loud. I can sit in another part of the house and hear them. my TV volume control does nothing. How do you go about turnong down the volume without buying alot of equipment? with a 94 year old half deaf father in law in the room next door i can't play any part of them. my mute button does not have any effect on it...really baffled. somebody please come to my aid......mike

How do you have it hooked up? Cable, a/v cables...

Is it just hooked up to your stereo also?

I would say you have something hooked up wrong and could damage your equipment.

This should be in npr section.

i chaned/edited it so the original post would show that they are 1 pocket tapes and there fore are pool related. thanks for bringing that to my attention..............mike

Unplugging the audio jacks that run from the VCR to the TV will eliminate the sound completely. That is the cheapest alternative.
Expensive/time consuming alternatives are as follows: Rerecord the tape from one VCR to another.
Put an attenuator in line between the left channel of the VCR and TV (you can buy a potentiometer from Radio Shack, but you would have to know what you are doing). I can provide instruction if you want to do this. It should only cost a couple of bucks.
You can also buy an in line volume control which would be more expensive than a potentiometer but might be easier to install. Basically it is a potentiometer but contained in a neater package with a knob on it.
Without knowing exactly how your VCR is wired to your TV sound, it would be difficult to suggest anything else.
