Having an understanding about league management frustrations, I would like to present some thoughts below. And if you would like, please email your comments/suggestions/ or simply state your interests to pete.l@aspnetnow.com and I'll organize and publish results in this forum.

Managing your league via Internet without server costs – no data entry and no paper work.

Functionality

1. League setup (Beginning of season)

a. League officers set up league profiles including handicapping system, dues, fees and calendar.
b. Team captains register their team with names and addresses, and pay fees accordingly using credit card, debit card or on-line check.
c. League officers accept or reject teams at their discretion
d. League officers set initial and locked handicaps (prior season handicaps can be auto-updated without entering)
d. Once teams have been approved and fixed, team captains and players receive user names and passwords for access
e. Schedules are then automatically generated

2. League in progress

a. Before each match a team member prints score sheets with optionally a current standings and stat sheet for use at their match.
b. At the end of each match and within a period of time dictated by league officers, team captains enter match results over internet. If a team does not have anyone with internet access, they may drop off to designated person. Each team results are compared to their opposition’s sheet independently. If both entered score sheets match, then results are updated. If results do not match, team captains can try to resolve or otherwise have league officers resolve.
c. Team members are able to log on and post friendly comments to their next opposing team through a league forum.
d. Stats can be viewed on line at any time
e. League officers may broadcast messages to the league or to teams and individual players only.

3. Other

Tournaments are announced and managed

Most important, the intent is to have a useful tool to manage leagues without the hassles of calculating handicaps, data entry work of entering scores and to enhance communications.

If interested, please email me at pete.l@aspnetnow.com. I will organize responses received and post it here.

Definately a good idea. Our League already posts stats online, though keeping it updated leaves something to be desired. I think that if you relied on each team captian to update every week's stats, they would fall behind inevitably. I like ther idea of payment of dues online though, would make life easier.

our site is at Http://nwapa.com

Good point, except. Do your stats get picked up each week? From different sites this is time consuming and fuel costs is another problem. If sheets are mailed or faxed in, this means clerical work.

The fix is, create point penalties. Many leagues are now subtracting points from teams that do not follow the rules. Also, what is the likelihood of both teams not entering results? Default is if one team does not update within 48 hours, the other teams results are assumed accurate and results are updated.

As you know there are always problems, but these are exceptions. Most will follow rules and those that do not? Well, at least now you have more time on your hands to deal with those.

Even if you handle 60% with ease over the internet, that is 60% you do not have to deal with.

Pete you are right on. Our league already provides a possible 2 point weekly bonus if you mail your scoresheet in the following day. This Motivates people to send everything in timely and accurately.

One of the main problems I see with most leagues is getting the various stats updated after each week's play. Quality , timeliness, & consistancy are key to this type of idea/program. I think the major executive league operators (APA, BCA, etc...) need to do a better job recognizing this issue and develop a standard program and software for each league area to use on a national level.

I know, dream on~ :o

It can happen quickly, that is to have an interactive Web based tool available for leagues to use. Leagues would have their own private space to run their agendas. This can be easily structured to guarantee total privacy including APA's methods for their handicapping system (we have defined several options to completely protect their privacy, even from us).

Right now I am making an attempt to define functional requirements. My next step is to create a structure and then distribute it for everyone interested to review and comment. If there is enough interest, I can have one of my IT groups that are off-project pull this together. I fully understand all associated costs, and have several alternatives to offset those costs to zero.

Right now the main thrust is to cut league management time and to make leagues more interactive with team members. If there is enough interest, I’ll move this forward.

How about this?...

Get a bunch of old computers (they're free everywhere), hook 'em up at the bars, get some group rate for internet access, then enter stats realtime as you play. Every team could know how the other teams were playing... and either Paypal, c/c or draft from the bars account could make the payment, saving the LO a ton of travel time.

The bars could even have some advertising, etc. on the computers for their customers. "Moe's Marauders fight for 1st Place...Sunday, Sunday, Sunday...Be there!"

Just thinking outloud,

Jeff Livingston

The future might hold that, but right now it would be an expense to taverns.

The benefit as I described it will;

1. Cut travel time
2. Eliminate league officer’s data entry
3. Simplify dues collection
3. Auto manage schedules, handicaps and tournaments
4. Provide a useful communications medium

Maybe shortly after allow PDA's and cell phone to update scores and view results, though not until success with the first phase.

If you would like to offer a handicapping sysem that is fair, difficult to sandbag and very easy to administer, check out the NPL info at http://www.sfbilliards.com/misc.htm which is a system that only requires final match scores and not game-by-game scores. See items 10 and 11 on that page.

I think that someone already offers a service similar to this. Look here and see if it fits the criteria;

The software has some reporting capabilities. It is not a complete web based management solution. Has good reporting though.
