,,,this has probably never come up, but when replacing a tenon, is it best to insert the new tenon with the grain of the shaft or turn it 90 degrees out, against the grain,,,or does it matter,,,any thoughts,,,?

Remember the word is "REPLACE",so put one back in, the same way as the one that was in there. There is no side strength to a tenon with grain running across the width, instead of lengthwise...JER
 
I like to thread them in. I've never worried about which way the grain is running, but it couldn't hurt.
