OK Folks my first post... When replaceing a Tenon, do you Thread the Tenon into the shaft and if so how deep should I go...?

I don't know about others but I know that I certainly don't. The walls of the bore are much to thin and weak to start with without cutting threads into it also. Just my opinion but I really don't believe there will be to many disagreeing.

5-16 drill......one inch deep.......rough tenon slightly with 80 grit....slow set epoxy.......
If you feel like getting real technical use an endmill to square the bottom of the hole..........

I agree. I use fluted tenons when I have them; cut my own out of scrap when I'm out. Works for me either way. d_ :)

I agree 100% with Dick.
Threading is overkill with the emphasis on KILL.

I make My own tenons ocasionally. I aggree that threading can make that small area of the shaft weak, and the only way I know to help with that would be to partially sleeve the ferrule over the shaft at the shoulder. It is not a sure fix though more then likely, so probably not good to thread them.:) I've never had a tenon come out from just a standard sleeve bore and tenon fit. Usually the tenon would snap off before that happened. Greg

Thanks for all the advise, I've been using fluted tenons and only going in the shaft about 1/2" and I wasn't threading the shaft. So I guess I'll go in 1", stick with the fluted tenons and use slow set epoxy. Oh and a Ivor-x Ferrule. :)

Forgot the glue relief slot but if your using fluted sticks it's all the same.

The operation was a success. However it was a bit uncomfortable going in the shaft 1" I've been goin in about 1/2" but it turned out just perfect. Threaded the Tenon, Ivor-X ferrule with a Med Moori. Been hitting with it for 2 days and it Hits Great.

Thanks to everyone for the help !!!

I agree with the "NO THREAD" guys. One thing that I do is to run a couple of wraps of masking tape around the end of the shaft. This reinforces the shaft as the new tenon is pushed into the hole, with the glue. Before I started doing this, I had a few shafts split at the end...JER
