I'm mailing in my entry today. :)

Too bad I already have a doubles partner, Eric. Or else I'd try and win it with you!

It was great to see you in Austin. I think 13th is a great finish in that field! :)

Missed Out

We were hoping to visit this one, because it's not too far away, but were unable to make it. Maybe next time...

Hope someone will post some of the results on the forum for us.

I am more familiar with the women's results... 44 women....First was a local girl named Ashley (don't remember her last name), 2nd was Rickie Casper, 3rd was Annie Doyle, 4th was Camille Madison, 5th/6th was Kim Peirce and Melinda Hinojosa, 7th/8th was Jerry Gooden and Kathy ? (another local lady).

In the open, 110 players. First was Mike Jackson from Arlington/Grand Prairie, Texas area and second was Tony (last name was something like Ewald ?) and heard he is from south of the Fort Worth area possibly. In the finals, Tony won the first set 5-2 and then Jackson won the second set 5-0. Third place went to M. Rabon who lost hill hill to Tony. I don't know the others.

Al Mason wasn't able to play in the tournament or the mini's but he came out to get in action and he found a few games and I heard he won each one.

Not sure about Amarillo... all that way and not sure how many ladies will show up for the Sunday event. Although, this BCA event was so cool, I may go up there in Nov for that.

I would like to attend one. I always try to calculate the odds of breaking even whenever I make a tournament.;)

Not sure if you mean "Break even" playing or running a tourney?

Being the referee at the state events and all these stops on the Texas Open Players Tour, I have the ability to see it from the administrative or promoter end as well as the player side.

Your event is designed to fill a void between Fast Eddies and the local bar tournament. That's why you say it isn't a true "Open Event" due to eliminating the pro players and the players that have placed high into the money at regional tours.

This event is designed to fill that gap between your event and the local bar tournament. You have to be a league player which tends to get rid of the "Hustlers" since most of them don't have the committment to play every week when there's no money involved. It also restricts Master Level players so the end result being a league player can get that "Big tournament experience" without the fear they will go 2 and out at the hands of upper level players and road whores.

Most players have no clue what it involves to put on a large tournament. All they do is count up the entry fees and then complain that there isn't enough payout.

I'm sure (correct me if I'm wrong) that Clicks is giving you a good deal on table time or may even be donating it to bring in the drink and snacks revenue.....I don't know.

I know it costs $8000 to bring in a truck of Diamond tables and a crew to setup/tear down and maintain them over a 3-4 day event. You can't order just half a truck. There might be some room to move if you only need to use 20-30 but the truck comes packed with 40.

The ballroom that the tournament is conducted in is not cheap either. If you get a deal at all it normally involves guaranteeing (SP) a number a rooms booked. Most of the players drive home or stay at some cheap place 10 miles away.

They complain that there is no music, well it costs like $100-150 a day just to get music piped in .

The players complain that there is nothing to eat, so the promoter asks the hotel to bring in a bar and a food vendor which costs the promoter money to arrange it.....then the players complain it's too expensive.

I guess once you become an established event (Like Yours) you can take some satisfaction in having a full bracket every month and seeing repeat players.

As an up and coming tournament I guess the only satisfaction you can take is seeing the players come back to the next event.

I know I wouldn't want to be a pool tour promoter, pool players by and large are an ungrateful bunch.

I can't argue with you there, pool players are historically an incredibly ungrateful lot. Such is the way of the pool world.

However, I have a few observations about the recent Texas Open Tour event in Grapevine. I did play in two of the divisions, so this isn't second hand.

As a tournament/tour director the most fundamental thing you can ask of the players is participation. Especially in an event where you are using coin tables and the coin drop plays such an important part in the success of the tournament.

Well, in Grapevine the players did their part. The participation level was outstanding. 63 Scotch 110 Men's and 40 Women's. If you are asking for better participation than that then perhaps the expectations are a little unrealistic.

And yet I heard the tournament lost money. And not a little bit.

So what is going wrong with these events that is causing them to lose money even when participation is so good?

Is the cost of table delivery and setup too high? Maybe, but how do you change that? No tables, no tourney.

Is the cost of the venue too high? Probably. The DFW Hilton Lakes is a really nice hotel and I am sure they wanted a boatload for their space. Could another hotel be chosen to save a little there?

Are the entry fees too low? Yes and No. The entry fee for the Scotch was too low. I realize that maximum participation is the goal, but I doubt you would lose many (if any) of those teams if the entry were $50 a team. You take a nominal administrative fee off the top of every entry and recoup some of the costs straight away.

There was talk of raising the cost of the Men's and Women's to $75 which I think is a big mistake. I would guess a hike like that is going cut participation in half and then you are in real trouble.

The players really can't do any more than show up and play and complain. That is their job. What more can they do? Practice more so there is a better coin drop? Play in mini tournaments that start at 1:00am?

If the tour is losing money, the organizers need to sit down and really determine where the losses are originating. Participation isn't the culprit.

It's possible that events of this kind just aren't feasible with the current costs of table deilvery and venue expense. That would be sad, but maybe that is simply the case.

At any rate, I fully support the Texas Open Tour and it's organizers. The role of tour/tournament/league director is a thankless one at best.

I for one apppreciate the efforts of anyone who takes their time to put on events for an "ungrateful lot."

There is definite room for improvement, but at least someone (not me obviously) is making an effort to promote pool in Texas by staging these events.

Well said!!!

Nicely put sir!! I have to say that there are some pool players that are grateful for the efforts being put forth here. I know I am and I can speak for a lot of others too!!

McKinneyMiner for President

I agree with the commentary from McKinnerMiner, for I am one of those ungrateful pool players bunch. Not really. I consider myself a very grateful pool player and will try to enter as many tournaments as I possibly can whenever and wherever possible. I am a maniac for this game. In fact, Tropical Storm Erin is threatening the Corpus Christi region as we speak, but will that stop me from going to the Hunter tour stop at Paradise Billiards this weekend.....HA, I think not!

I, too, applaud the efforts of Tabor and anyone else working on trying to promote pool. Sure there are kinks to work out, but TOT in the Dallas area was the 2nd event of this year and hopefully there will be more to come where the pool promoters, directors, players---everyone can benefit. I love this game and will help out in anyway that I possibly can.

I agree that the Scotch Doubles entry fee was too low. I also heard that there is a possibility that they might increase the singles entry fee to $75 but there would be NO coins used for the matches. This would be a viable option.

Anyhow, the Dallas TOT event was fun, exciting, and I hope that there will be many more to come. Tabor did an excellent job. And to all those ungrateful poolplayers who participated in the event, good job as well.

I played/donated in the scotch doubles event and singles event and will keep those donations coming in as long as the good Lord lets me. :)
