Piling Rocks in My Cave
When he was 13 he had that look. Everyone knew it. He'd walk around the Marble Club with his cue, his hat and that grin. The hat is gone, but its the same cue and the same grin. He'd hit a shot and he'd get wide eyed as he watched the ball roll around the table. I've never, ever seen anyone with that look. We all watched him, we all knew that it was a matter of time. When he was 18, no one could touch him. He was beating people and his charm made people like it when they got beat by him. He'd come to our little pool tournament that we had in Spearfish just to play. Sure he knew that he'd make $100 bucks, but he wanted to play. He'd walk in and we'd all be glad to see him. Because whoever played him was going to get a good match. In Rapid, I split one time with him as Tom yelled from upstairs, "Aren't you guys done yet? Hurry up will ya!" Shane got that look and we split.
Over the past 6 weeks I've seen him do the things I've always known he would do. Shane worked hard his whole life, ever since he could pick up a cue and he hasn't ever stopped. Throughout his youth and into his adult hood, he has had one thing on his mind, to be the best. He has a lot of heart and I'm really proud of him. All of us from the Northern Hills of South Dakota knew that one day he'd be up there with the world beaters...and well here he is.
Shane, I just want to say I'm really proud of you. You bring to this game a professional attitude, you bring class, and you bring heart. May all the rolls truly go your way.
your pal,
TK.
